Crimson is our selection of fruit from younger parcels of vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity with time. Now, Crimson is developing more depth of flavour, with a mix of vines aged from 5 to 20 years.

The nose is complex and beguiling with notes of cranberry, raspberry, carraway and an earthy spice note. A finely structured palate, with a gentle sweet entry and enticing bramble fruits and finishes with a flourish of fine savoury tannins – classic Martinborough.

The winemaking philosophy is the same as for our signature Pinot Noir: no enzymes or yeasts are added, providing a hands-off, traditional approach which we feel more truly expresses the site.

Undoubtedly one of the best Pinot Noir makers in the famous area of Martinborough, Ata Rangi produces amazing wines year in and year out. This winery was one of the first to plant grapes in this region in 1979. The clone is Dijon and Abel which is now widely known as the Ata Rangi clone in New Zealand. Instead of turning out monotonous wines, the style of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is complex, elegant and supple with gorgeous ripeness of red fruit and spice. Wines of Ata Rangi can well be New Zealand’s top treasure to export.

Ata Rangi, meaning “dawn sky” or “new beginning” is a small New Zealand winery with a renowned reputation for Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island in the village of Martinborough, it is owned and managed by a family trio – Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Clive planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area. Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is undoubtedly the flagship wine, and in 2010 was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or “Grand Cru of New Zealand”. With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson.

We produce three expressions of Pinot Noir; the renowned Ata Rangi Pinot Noir, the single vineyard McCrone Block Pinot Noir and Ata Rangi ‘Crimson’, an earlier-drinking style yet still a very serious expression of the variety. Sales of Crimson help to support ‘Project Crimson’ the charitable conservation trust focused on saving New Zealand’s iconic red-flowering rata and pohutukawa.

Célèbre is our very own ‘Rhone-meets-Bordeaux’, a classic, delicious Merlot-Syrah-Cabernet blend, the first award-winning few barrels of which were first produced under the toolshed verandah in 1986.

Our whites consist of a Chardonnay – the silky, seamless, elegant Craighall from 30+ year-old Mendoza clone vines, on the original Craighall Vineyard site opposite the Home Block, and other parcels of Mendoza, the ‘hen and chicken’ clone. On the aromatic side, a deliciously complex Raranga Sauvignon Blanc delivers riper flavours and texture that varies from the typical Kiwi Sauvignon. Our Lismore Pinot Gris is picked late in the season and crafted in a typically Alsatian style. From our Cellars, we release a bottle-aged Craighall Riesling each year, classically dry, complex and minerally. Finally, our delightful Rosé is a wonderful aperitif, not just in summer and, for many, the pièce de résistance is our luscious botrytised Riesling named ‘Kahu’ – Maori for the harrier hawk that roosts in the neighbouring vineyard of the same name.
