Château Brane-Cantenac stands proudly in the heart of the prestigious Margaux appellation.  Renowned for its wines of remarkable elegance and finesse, this 75 hectare property is an emblem of quality and excellence in the world of fine wines.

The vineyards carry within them the will of men. The legend of Brane-Cantenac, born 300 years ago, evokes a flourishing relationship between man and the land, growing over the years. Called Hostein in the 18th century, this great vineyard was then bought by the Gorce family, and produced one of the most famous wines of the Médoc long before the classification of 1855.

As for our 2nd wine, Baron de Brane, its name pays homage to the famous Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, the Napoleon of the vines, owner of these lands in the 19th century. The Lurton family have been at the helm of the property for four generations, as dedicated caretakers who continue to ensure the property thrives and the wines of the highest quality are produced.

Since 1992, Henri has continued the journey started by his father and his ancestors. While adept at innovation and new technologies, Henri never loses sight of the traditional values which remain an intrinsic part of Brane's identity. Above all, he is proud of his unique terroir and aware of the need to treat the soil, the vineyard and the grape with the utmost respect while ensuring the destinies of Brane.

Each plot and sub-plot has unique characteristics, making it more suitable for certain grape varieties. In Brane, the grape variety includes Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (4.5%) and Carmenère (0.5%). The vineyard is constantly micro-managed with a single objective: to produce grapes of optimal quality while maintaining low yields. The replanting efforts of recent years as well as a transition to organic viticulture bear witness to our strong commitment to sustainable viticulture.

Obtaining the best fruit requires a unique exchange between man and nature, based on a deep understanding of the land itself, through centuries of experience. Famous for its deep gravelly soils, rich in minerals, Brane has some of the most beautiful plots in Margaux. The castle is located on an illustrious plateau, its topography offers excellent natural drainage, with gravel soils requiring the roots of the vine to draw in depth its nourishment.

From mid-September begins one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year. At the castle, usually peaceful and quiet, there is intense activity as everyone prepares to reap the fruits so lovingly cared for all year round. In-depth scientific analyzes and a tasting of the grapes take place before making the decision to start the harvest. The grapes can only be harvested if each plot has reached optimum maturity.

A rigorous sorting process is carried out grape by grape variety and plot by plot, thanks to an optical sorting device allowing unprecedented precision and quality control. The grapes are then crushed before fermentation, maceration and pressing, followed by barreling into barrels. Each of these steps requires patience, precision and impeccable hygiene.

The wine rests during its aging in a cellar away from heat and light in order to prepare for its life in the bottle. Micro-oxygenation occurs as the wine slowly and gradually absorbs oxygen through the staves of the barrels. During this initial aging process, oenologists regularly taste the wine, evaluating its rate of development. In Brane, the type of barrels used (up to 70% new barrels) and the length of aging (on average 18 months) are determined according to the characteristics of the vintage and the blend.

Sufficiency has no place with Brane. Tradition must be associated with a forward-looking approach and a constant search for improvements. Recent investments in a completely renovated vat room and significant improvements made to the equipment express a concerted approach to improving quality while reducing our ecological footprint. Continuous experimentation in the vat room and cellar ensures our presence at the cutting edge of modern viticulture.
