The grapes of this Veltliner come from the highest elevated terraces of the Schenkenbichl vineyard, grown at about 315 m above sea level. Here, our 60-year-old vines are rooted deep in the brittle, metamorphic rock soil, which is formed of the remains of an ancient mountain range. It predominantly consists of dark amphibolite, reaching to the surface. The influence of those rocks is reflected in the wines, which are cool and elegant with a spicy-mineral saltiness to them.

We are very pleased to represent the family run domaine of Hiedler from Austria. Managed by Ludwig Hiedler and his lovely wife Maria Angeles, this internationally acclaimed winery was cited as one of the top two rising star estates of Austria by Tom Stevenson (author of Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia). Hiedler constructs brilliant examples of the Gruner Veltliner grape and a Riesling action packed with appropriate typicity and verve, all the while harnessing the terroir of the stone gray slate soil.

Ludwig Hiedler, like most of Altaya’s producers, is an artisan, striving to see how many chemical and mechanical accretions of modernity he can strip away. Utilizing a natural spontaneous fermentation, no supplemental enzymes and no added sulfur to the must, thus deriving more expression and distinctiveness to the wines. This approach is a reaction to what Hiedler sees as standardization of world wine as well as an attempt to bring cellar practices into harmony with his herbicide- and pesticide-free vineyard. “And there’s a third reason,” he adds. “I’m looking for excitement! There’s always excitement in the vineyard, and I want some of that inside the cellar as well!” From the exciting Altaya office, we concur Ludwig!
