(Wine Advovate Score 93) The 2021 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken is pure and coolish on the intense and concentrated nose. From phyllite slate soils, this is a full-bodied, intense and salty-piquant, highly stimulating Riesling with lots of energy, phenolic grip and mineral tension. With fine tannin structure, the massive and concentrated body and fruit lead to a long and intense, aromatic finish. Long but still shy and still somewhat coated. Bottled at the end of June. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022.

The Turmberg name refers to the surviving keep of what was once Scharfenstein Castle. Built around 1160, the hilltop fortress sits a full 240 meters above sea level on a hillside spur to the northeast of Kiedrich. It was intended by the region's territorial rulers to secure the Rheingau's eastern flank, as well as an important trading route.

The German Wine Act of 1971 merged the old Turmberg site designation into the Kiedrich Wasseros site. In 2005, however, Weingut Robert Weil re-applied the moniker for its monopole.

The Turmberg lies on the face of a steep mountain spur. The soils on this slatey crag are mostly comprised of stony fragmented phyllite interspersed with loess and loam.

The wines from this vineyard show a sophisticated, almost gossamer minerality.
