(James Suckling Score 96) Very intense, lemony notes here with dried honeysuckle, apple curd, bright quince and spearmint. There’s a layered, compressed quality to the center palate, despite the impressive power here, and the acidity drives long and pure. Ripe but well-defined on the finish. Drink now.

Our forebears recognised centuries ago that this south-facing hillside, sloping down toward the village, is a particularly favoured site for winegrowing. AULERDE was first mentioned by name in records as early as 1380. This is our warmest site, where the grapes ripen early.

The core of the AULERDE, where our Riesling vines are growing, is composed of heavy clayish marl with minor portions of loess-loam and limestone, while the subsoil consists of yellow and gravelly, sandy clay. Our vines in this site are nearly seventy years old, and planted to great density.

"A wafting dream of pitch-perfect aromas, abuzz with harmonious fruit and minerality; a sublime perfume and yet also a nigh-explosive aromatic cloud that radiates out without limit. The 2018's palate opens with fantastic raciness and distinctive cool charisma, despite the fact that this is one of the estate’s warmest GG sites. It arrives with a sleek, dreamy body, refreshing and enticing the senses with power and concentration wrapped in a playful nimbleness. While I heralded last year to be the best Aulerde of all time, I must contradict myself. 2018 is all that.... and more, especially in terms of finesse.”

"A prominent voice in the rise of the Rheinhessen in Germany's Riesling firmament, Philipp Wittmann produces wines of delicate balance. They harness the power of the region, but restrain it just enough so that the wines, while almost austere, are always drinkable even thirst-quenching. All the wines are dry, and the village Westhofener Riesling is a great place to start." (Rajat Parr and Jordan Mackay - The Sommelier's Atlas of Taste)
