Collection: Beaumont Family

History Beaumont Family Wines, located in Bot River within South Africa's Overberg region, traces its origins to the 18th century as Compagnes Drift, an outpost of the Dutch East India Company producing fruit, vegetables, dairy, wine, and flour. The farm, home to the region's oldest wine cellar, was acquired by Raoul and Jayne Beaumont in 1974, who planted vines and initiated wine production under the Compagnes Drift label. The first Beaumont-labeled wine emerged in 1994, crafted by Jayne Beaumont. In 2004, son Sebastian Beaumont assumed leadership, rebranding the estate and refining its focus on premium varietals. Now a family-owned operation spanning 48 years of viticulture and 30 years of winemaking, it produces limited quantities emphasizing terroir expression.

Viticulture Philosophy Beaumont cultivates vines on ancient, low-yielding sites, including 47-year-old Chenin Blanc and 50-year-old Pinotage plantings on east-facing slopes of cool, clay-rich shale soils. The philosophy prioritizes minimal intervention in the vineyard, allowing the terroir's unique characteristics—such as Bot River's maritime climate with cooling breezes and diurnal shifts—to dictate grape quality. Sustainable practices, including organic methods and biodiversity enhancement, guide operations, with a focus on varieties like Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc to achieve elegance over power.

Winemaking Techniques Sebastian Beaumont's approach is instinctive and hands-on, rooted in the belief that great wines originate in the vineyard. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in old open concrete fermenters or neutral oak vats, employing traditional techniques like whole-cluster pressing for whites. Reds undergo extended maceration followed by aging in French oak (20-30% new) for 12-18 months to integrate structure without overpowering fruit. Minimal sulfur and no fining preserve purity, resulting in balanced, characterful wines that reflect the estate's heritage.

Critics and Journalist Praises Beaumont's wines, particularly the flagship Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc from 47-year-old vines, have earned 12 Platter's Guide 5-Star ratings, including nine consecutive vintages, lauded for its pear, patisserie, and vibrant acidity. Critics commend the Mourvèdre as a pioneering single-varietal expression since 1999, noted for its dark, earthy spice and aging potential. The Pinotage is praised for its fresh red berry notes and smooth tannins, embodying South Africa's nuanced style. Overall, Beaumont is recognized as a benchmark for elegant, terroir-driven South African wines, with consistent acclaim for innovation and authenticity.
