Collection: Dog Point

History Dog Point Vineyard, located in Marlborough, New Zealand, represents one of the region's oldest privately owned vineyards, with initial plantings established in the late 1970s at the confluence of the Brancott and Omaka Valleys. The name originates from early European settlement, referring to a hilltop used by shepherds and their boundary-keeping dogs to protect sheep flocks. Ivan and Margaret Sutherland, pioneers in Marlborough viticulture, planted the original 52 acres and supplied grapes to Cloudy Bay, where Ivan served as chief viticulturist for 18 years. In 1991, Ivan met James Healy, Cloudy Bay's head winemaker for 12 years. Sharing a vision for artisanal winemaking, they founded Dog Point in 2002, releasing the first wines in 2004 from the estate's 80-hectare holdings. The Healy and Sutherland families continue ownership, with succession to the next generation, including Matt Sutherland as general manager.

Viticulture Philosophy Dog Point manages 280 hectares of certified organic vineyards, the largest such expanse in New Zealand, converted starting in 2009 under the Biogro program. Viticulture emphasizes low-yield, hand-harvested vines on silty clay loams and gravelly soils, leveraging Marlborough's sunny, dry climate and diurnal temperature shifts for balanced ripeness and acidity. Practices include cover crops like buckwheat in spring to attract beneficial insects, winter grazing by sheep and steers for weed control and soil enrichment, and minimal intervention to enhance biodiversity and terroir expression. Varieties focus on Sauvignon Blanc (valley floor sites), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (ridge plantings), with vine ages up to 40 years for intensity and depth.

Winemaking Techniques Winemaking at Dog Point adopts a hands-off approach to preserve fruit integrity and complexity. Grapes undergo whole-bunch pressing and fermentation with a blend of native and cultured yeasts in stainless steel for Sauvignon Blanc, ensuring vibrancy without oak influence. Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc ferments in older French oak barrels for texture. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir receive extended barrel aging (up to 18 months) in French oak with minimal racking, incorporating wild yeasts and lees stirring for structure. Bottling occurs without fining or heavy filtration, yielding wines that balance immediate accessibility with graceful aging potential.

Critics and Journalist Praises Dog Point's wines are benchmarked for their nuance and quality, transcending typical Marlborough styles. The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc earned 93 points from Jamie Goode for its "bright lime and passionfruit" aromatics with "amazing mineral qualities." James Suckling describes the portfolio as "excellent wines with drive and energy." Wine Enthusiast named Dog Point a "top Marlborough producer to watch," praising its complexity. Grape Collective highlights the Sauvignon Blanc's "sensuous smokiness" and depth, while The Real Review and Decanter commend the organic practices and terroir-driven finesse, with consistent 90+ scores for elegance and aging potential.
