Collection: Scarbolo
History Scarbolo, a family-owned winery in the Friuli Grave area of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, was established in 1982 by Valter Scarbolo, who planted the first vineyards in the 1980s on the right bank of the Torre River in Lauzacco. Valter inherited a passion for viticulture from his father and built upon generations of agricultural tradition. The winery, now led by the third generation—daughter Lara and son Mattia Scarbolo—operates as a boutique producer, emphasizing innovation and progress while honoring Friuli's heritage. The logo, featuring growing wheels, symbolizes continuous evolution across generations.
Viticulture Philosophy Scarbolo manages 30 hectares of vineyards in the diverse landscapes of Friuli Grave, benefiting from the region's alpine and Adriatic influences, which provide a cool climate conducive to elegant whites. The estate cultivates Pinot Grigio (a primary focus, with multiple interpretations), Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Refosco. Sustainable practices guide operations, prioritizing terroir expression, balance, and minimal environmental impact to produce structured wines that reflect the unique qualities of the Friulian land.
Winemaking Techniques Scarbolo crafts wines with a philosophy of elegance, texture, and persistence, often exploring innovative expressions such as ramato (skin-contact) Pinot Grigio and appassimento styles. Techniques emphasize purity and balance, drawing on the region's aptitude for whites while incorporating restrained oak or extended maceration for reds like Refosco. The approach blends tradition with dynamism, resulting in approachable yet refined wines that highlight varietal character and regional typicity.
Critics and Journalist Praises Scarbolo is recognized for its structured and elegant Pinot Grigio expressions, contributing to Friuli's reputation for quality whites. The 2020 Mepari Pinot Grigio earned 92 points from Falstaff, commended for its refined profile. Visitors and reviewers highlight the winery's commitment to authenticity and innovation, with consistent appreciation for its balanced, terroir-driven portfolio in a region celebrated for distinctive white wines.
