Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 90-92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2020 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel continues this cuvée's hot streak. A blend of approximately 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, with 10% Carignan, it boasts attractive floral overtones, hints of crushed stone and ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied and impressively silky for such a young wine, it should be drinkable upon release and for at least a decade thereafter.
- 92 Points - James Suckling: Deep, savory nose with notes of ripe black cherries and plum cake, plus minty and floral notes. In spite of the considerable power and generous tannin, this is very focused and elegant. The long, energetic finish suggests this has years of life ahead of it. Drink or hold.
- The 30-Hectare Coudoulet Terroir: Located just east of the Château de Beaucastel vineyard, separated only by the A7 autoroute. It shares identical geological origins: marine molasse covered by a thick mantle of Alpine diluvium and smooth quartzite stones (*galets roulés*), which radiate warmth and yield remarkable depth and complexity.
- Perrin Family Craftsmanship: Distinctively centered around Mourvèdre (roughly 30%), alongside Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault. Farmed organically and biodynamically, each varietal is vinified separately and matured in large neutral oak *foudres* for six months, prioritizing fresh fruit expression, spice, and authentic southern Rhône identity.
Highlights
- Mourvèdre-driven Côtes-du-Rhône from the Perrin family, grown on Châteauneuf-quality *galets roulés* soils.
- Certified organic viticulture aged exclusively in large neutral oak *foudres*.
- A balanced, expressive 2020 vintage; drinking wonderfully now through 2032+.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in appearance, it opens with fragrant aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and plums, layered with provincial herbs, cracked black pepper, cured meat, and crushed pebbles. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and generously textured, wrapping savory dark fruit around fine-grained, powdery tannins and fresh natural acidity, culminating in a persistent, spice-tinged, and appetizing finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in standard Rhône or Bordeaux glassware.
- Decanting: Decant for 30 to 45 minutes to let its garrigue and savory spice open. Best enjoyed now through 2032+.
