Ripe Yellow Apple, White Peach, Lemon Curd, and Creamy Franschhoek Opulence

The 2022 Bellingham "The Founders Series" Freda White Blend is an elegant, deeply complex, and luxurious Cape white blend crafted in tribute to Freda Podlashuk, who alongside her husband Bernard co-founded the modern Bellingham estate. Sourced from high-altitude, old-vine vineyards in Franschhoek and the Coastal Region, this barrel-fermented blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc captures Cape winemaking at its finest. Soaring aromas of ripe yellow apple, white peach, lemon curd, orange blossom, and toasted brioche lead into a full-bodied, satiny palate supported by vibrant citrus acidity and a long, honeyed mineral finish.

Terroir & Winemaking Craft

  • Heritage Blend Sourcing: Anchored by old-vine Chenin Blanc for backbone and vibrant acidity, blended with Viognier for exotic white floral perfume and stone fruit richness, alongside Grenache Blanc for texture and mineral drive. Sourced from low-yielding Franschhoek and Coastal Region parcels planted on decomposed granite and sandstone soils.
  • Artisanal Barrel Fermentation: Naturally fermented and aged in select French oak barrels (incorporating a mix of new and seasoned oak) with regular lees stirring (battonage). This traditional Burgundian technique gives "Freda" its luxurious, velvety mouthfeel, pastry spice complexity, and long aging potential.

Highlights

  • A flagship Cape white blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc from old-vine coastal vineyards.
  • A rich, opulent 2022 release packed with ripe yellow apple, white peach, lemon curd, orange blossom, and toasted brioche.
  • Crafted by Bellingham as part of their ultra-premium "Founders Series", offering 6 to 12+ years of cellar potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep straw-gold with luminous greenish highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Intensely fragrant, complex, and layered. It opens with aromas of ripe yellow apple, white peach, and preserved lemon, accompanied by orange blossom, honeyed almond, toasted brioche, and sweet vanilla spice.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and satiny. The entry brings a rich wave of stone fruit and citrus sap that flows across a textured mid-palate, held together by fresh natural acidity into a long, toasted oak and mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 10–12°C (avoid over-chilling) to allow its complex oak and floral aromatics to open fully.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant helps uncoil its rich layers if enjoying young. Best enjoyed now through 2034+.
  • Western Pairing: Roast pork loin with apple reduction, creamy seafood bisque, grilled lobster with herb butter, or roasted chicken with morels.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Hainanese chicken rice, Cantonese-style steamed grouper with soy and ginger, or mild Thai yellow curry.
