Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 89–91 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): Firm reduction dominates the nose at present. Otherwise, there is very good freshness and detail to the vibrant medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic finish that offers both fine depth and length. As Côte de Brouilly typically is, this is robust and powerful and will need a few years of keeping to round out.
- Volcanic "Pierre Bleue" Terroir: Perched on the steep, conical slopes of Mont Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly is distinct for its ancient volcanic substrate known locally as *corneverte* or diorite (blue stone). These thin, stony volcanic soils provide exceptional drainage and infuse the wine with unmistakable mineral salinity, tension, and aromatic freshness.
- Lucien Le Moine Grand Cru Elevage: Renowned Beaune micro-négociants Mounir and Rotem Saouma bring their exacting Côte d'Or savoir-faire to Beaujolais. Aged on full, undisturbed gross lees in seasoned oak barrels with zero sulfur additions during maturation, this meticulous method buffers the cool 2021 acidity while preserving vivid terroir transparency.
Highlights
- 100% Gamay grown on the iconic volcanic blue diorite (*pierre bleue*) soils of Mont Brouilly.
- Elevated with Lucien Le Moine’s signature Burgundy micro-négociant methods and long lees maturation.
- A classically taut, mineral-etched 2021 release; prime drinking from 2025 through 2035+.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in color, it opens with pure, mineral-laden aromas of wild blueberries, redcurrants, and crushed violet petals, accented by cracked black pepper, damp slate, and a hint of smoky basalt. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, and taut, delivering crunchy dark and red berry fruit underpinned by chiseled, fine-grained tannins and energetic mineral acidity that drives into an exceptionally long, savory, and mouth-watering finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stems.
- Decanting: Decant for 45 minutes to 1 hour to let its volcanic minerality and floral perfume unfold. Best enjoyed through 2035+.
