Moss Wood, planted in 1969 in Wilyabrup, is a pioneering winery in Margaret River and widely regarded as one of the region’s best estates. Their Chardonnay is made from estate-grown fruit, hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation begins in stainless steel and continues partly in 50% new French oak barrels, followed by 12–16 months in oak with full malolactic fermentation. The 2024 vintage is rich yet lively, with excellent length, depth, and structure, suitable for both early drinking and long cellaring.
Tasting Notes
The 2024 vintage shows peach, nectarine, orange marmalade, honey, roast almonds, caramel, and lightly toasty oak, with crisp acidity and firm but balanced tannin. Across recent vintages, the style is consistently full-bodied, citrus and stone-fruit driven, with nutty, slightly toasty oak and a firm, clean finish.
Awards and Accolades
The 2024 vintage scored 95 by The Wine Front and is rated extremely highly by multiple critics. Moss Wood’s 2017 Chardonnay was previously voted Australia’s best Chardonnay by James Halliday’s Wine Companion, and points have remained consistently high across recent years.
Serving and Cellaring
Serve at around 10–12°C in a white wine glass. This Chardonnay is powerful and robust, with enough structure to cellar for another decade, though it can also be enjoyed now with roast chicken, rich pasta, or mature hard cheeses.
