Crafted by Bodegas Muga, a family-owned winery founded in 1932 in Rioja Alta, Spain, the 2021 Rioja Reserva is a blend of approximately 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and the remainder Mazuelo and Graciano, sourced from vineyards in the Haro region on calcareous clay and alluvial soils at elevations of 600-750 meters. Hand-harvested grapes, picked late in a cooler 2021 vintage until October 20, are fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, separating qualities, villages, and soils for precision. The wine matures for 24 months in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels (20% new), with racking every eight to nine months, followed by fining with egg whites and bottling in January 2024. This meticulous, sustainable approach, including Muga’s in-house cooperage, delivers a wine that balances the vintage’s power, elegance, and freshness, reflecting Rioja’s traditional style with modern finesse.

Tasting Notes

This Reserva presents a bright ruby-red hue with a garnet-tinged rim, offering aromas of wild blackberries, blueberries, and spices, with hints of cedar, balsamic, and white pepper. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, long, and elegant, delivering flavors of ripe dark berries, cocoa powder, and integrated oak, supported by silky tannins, sharp yet balanced acidity, and a very long, fruit-forward finish.

Awards and Accolades

The 2021 Muga Rioja Reserva earned 94 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, praised for its power, concentration, elegance, and perfectly ripened tannins in a harmonious vintage. It also received 94 points from Jeb Dunnuck for its full-bodied concentration and silky texture, 93 points from James Suckling for its plush, fresh profile, and 92 points from Vinous for its balanced, fruit-forward nose with sour cherry and balsamic notes.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve at 16°C after one hour of decanting to enhance its aromatic complexity. Enjoy now for its vibrant fruit or cellar until 2045 to develop deeper layers of leather, tobacco, and earth. A textbook example of Muga’s flagship Reserva style.
