Wild Cherries, Dried Roses, Forest Floor, and Classical Langhe Elegance

The 2020 Prunotto Barolo DOCG is an aristocratic, classically sculpted Nebbiolo from the Langhe hills. Guided by Antinori’s refined touch, it unfolds delicate aromas of sour red cherries, wild strawberries, dried rose petals, leather, and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium-bodied and tensile, it wraps fragrant fruit around firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity, culminating in a long, savory, and mineral-laced finish.

Critical Recognition

Robert Parker's WA 93 pts
  • 93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: This program appears to have gone through quite a dramatic transformation over the past years, passing from more extracted wines to much lighter and brighter expressions instead. The Prunotto 2020 Barolo is a big release of nearly 134,000 bottles, with fruit sourced from a variety of vineyards. More than its DNA, however, it's the style of the wine that has taken a radical departure. This Barolo shows a light ruby color with a fragrant bouquet focused mostly but not only on violets and lilacs; red fruits follow with hints of aniseed and crushed stone. It's easy-drinking, but it also shows new purpose, and that's not an easy feat for a production this large.

Highlights

  • 100% Nebbiolo sourced from carefully selected hillside parcels across premier Barolo communes, including Monforte d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga d'Alba.
  • Cultivated on classic Sant'Agata fossil marl and Helvetian sandstone soils, delivering quintessential aromatic perfume, mineral tension, and firm age-worthy structure.
  • Crafted by the historic Prunotto estate (established in 1904), managed with meticulous focus on terroir transparency and balance by the Antinori family since 1989.
  • Aged for approximately 18 months in large traditional Slavonian and French oak casks (botti grandi), preserving varietal purity and delicate florals without modern oak sweetness.
  • From the balanced, warm 2020 Piedmont harvest; offering attractive youthful drinkability alongside the stamina to age gracefully through 2038+.

Tasting Notes

Luminous garnet-red with brilliant ruby reflections, it opens with pure, classic aromas of sour red cherries, wild strawberries, and pomegranates, elegantly layered with dried rose petals, violet potpourri, pipe tobacco, forest floor, and a faint mineral whiff of crushed stone. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, linear, and taut, wrapping crunchy red fruit around fine-grained, architectural tannins and mouth-watering acidity, concluding on a clean, savory, and remarkably persistent dry finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in expansive Burgundy or large Nebbiolo stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1 hour prior to serving if drinking young to let its floral aromatics, dried herbs, and fruit depth fully unwind. Peak drinking window 2026 through 2038+.
