Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 94 Points – James Suckling: "This pinot noir is still very young and a bit tight. However, it already has wonderful rooty and spicy complexity with notes of dried cherries and candied orange peel. Impressive concentration and plenty of fine tannins for the challenging vintage, this has been built to last but it also has enough red berry charm to be drinkable now. Very long precisely contoured finish. From biodynamically grown grapes."
- The Master Dynasty of Rouffach: Established in 1620 by Michel Muré near Westhalten, the Muré family (now spearheaded by René and his children Véronique and Thomas) holds an iconic lineage in Alsace winemaking. Operating entirely out of the Vorbourg Grand Cru slopes, the estate has been farmed under strict organic and certified biodynamic (Demeter) practices. The Pinot Noir "V" is meticulously sourced from premium east-facing plots richer in clay within the Vorbourg hillside. By managing extraction with substantial whole-bunch vinification and aging in larger 500-liter casks rather than small barriques, Muré crafts a complex, deeply serious Pinot Noir that closely rivals elite village Burgundies.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir sourced entirely from premium, east-facing plots inside the prestigious Vorbourg terroir in Rouffach.
- Vines are rooted in iron-rich calcareous clay and marl-limestone matrices, imbuing the wine with its signature supple texture and complex structural drive.
- Meticulously vinified under certified organic and biodynamic frameworks with up to 42% whole-bunch cluster inclusion to elevate aromatic perfumes.
- Aged with care in large 500-liter French oak barrels (28% brand-new wood) to gently micro-oxygenate without overwhelming the delicate fruit.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright ruby-red with brilliant magenta-garnet contours.
- Nose: Intensely deep, spicy, and layered, unveiling complex aromatics of dried red cherry, wild strawberry, and candied orange peel, supported beautifully by dried herbs, white pepper, and an undercurrent of wet, rooty earth.
- Palate: Strictly dry, medium-bodied, and tightly knit. Saturated layers of sour red berries and earthy spices expand across the entry, driven smoothly by a crisp line of native acidity. The mouthfeel is surprisingly concentrated for the cool vintage, framed by plenty of fine-grained, youthful tannins that expand into a very long, precisely contoured, and savory finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–15°C to highlight its intricate, spicy aromas and keep its tight structure fresh.
- Decanting: As this 2021 release is still remarkably young and slightly compact, a 30-to-45 minute decant is highly recommended to let the fine tannins loosen and unleash its deep orange peel bouquet. Built with superb structural longevity to cellar nicely over the next 6–10 years (2026–2032).
- Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast, game terrines, pan-seared calf's liver with raspberry vinegar, or slow-cooked pork loins.
- Asian Pairing: 明炉燒鴨 (Roasted Duck), 滷水鵝 (Chiu Chow Braised Goose), or 豉油雞 (Soy Sauce Chicken).
