Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 89-91 pts
Jasper Morris 90-92 pts
- 89-91 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): Here the fruit derives more from the dark side of the spectrum with its aromas of plum, dark cherry, violet and a hint of humus. The seductively textured and caressing medium weight flavors possess good richness before culminating in an equally dusty and bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that is firmer but not quite as persistent, at least not at this point.
- 90-92 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Another fine crimson to purple colour. The nose is a little more savoury than the velvety Chambolle, medium plus bodied, more lifted at the finish. The little peppery note at the finish made me think of whole bunches, but not. Attractive finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Nov 2023.
- Home-Turf Terroir of Morey-Saint-Denis: Nestled between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis naturally synthesizes the earthy structure of the former with the silky floral elegance of the latter. Sourced from estate-owned plots on clay-limestone soils, this village bottling displays the true heart of the appellation.
- Organic Mastery at Domaine Taupenot-Merme: Led by sibling team Romain and Virginie Taupenot, this Morey-Saint-Denis-based estate spans 13 hectares across prestigious Burgundian appellations. Practicing organic viticulture, they employ minimal extraction and disciplined oak usage to allow each vineyard’s unique geological identity to shine through unadorned.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir organically farmed from prime estate village plots in Morey-Saint-Denis.
- A radiant 2022 expression combining dark plum fruit, violet florality, and earthy complexity.
- Crafted by the renowned Domaine Taupenot-Merme, celebrated for their pure, terroir-focused winemaking style.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, luminous ruby-purple core with energetic crimson reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Rich, open, and aromatic. It opens with aromas of dark plums, wild black raspberries, and fresh violets, accompanied by notes of damp earth, forest underbrush, and gentle oak spice.
- Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully balanced. The entry delivers a succulent wave of dark fruit sap supported by supple, fine-grained tannins. Driven by lively natural acidity, it finishes clean, persistent, and pleasantly complex.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle chill preserves the energetic berry fruit and highlights its floral aromatics.
- Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant is recommended to allow the aromatics and subtle earth notes to uncoil. Enjoy now through 2033+.
- Western Pairing: Roast duck breast, pan-seared pork tenderloin with herbs, veal cutlets, wild mushroom risottos, or mild soft cheeses.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
