Black Cherries, Violets, Crushed Graphite, and Benchmark Barossa Power

The 2023 Torbreck "RunRig" is an extraordinary, Côte-Rôtie inspired Barossa icon. Sourced from historic centenarian vines and co-fermented with a splash of Viognier, it reveals commanding aromas of black cherries, wild blackberries, dried violets, graphite, and dark cocoa. Full-bodied, velvety, and tensile, it wraps profound dark fruit depth in fine, architectural tannins and balanced natural acidity, concluding on an expansive, savory, and endless finish.

Critical Recognition

Robert Parker's WA 97 pts
  • 97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2023 RunRig came from a cool, wet and late season, and the wine tastes so clearly both like RunRig and like 2023. It is savory and dense, powerful and concentrated, and the 1% Viognier (added, not co-fermented) contributes a gentle sway of flowers and dried apricots to the mix. This is a wonderful wine, one that ages with grace and ease. Last year, I did a vertical of the RunRig back to the first vintage, 1996, and the wine revealed itself to be sensitive to vintage variation yet true to its regional sourcing and identity. The fruit for this wine comes from six old-vine vineyards in the Barossa, each chosen for its textural, structural and flavor attributes. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Highlights

  • Torbreck’s flagship masterwork inspired by Côte-Rôtie, blending predominantly old-vine Shiraz (~98%) with a small fraction of Viognier (~2%) to enhance perfume, silkiness, and aromatic lift.
  • Sourced from historic, low-yielding bush-trained vines (up to 160+ years of age) spread across six prime Barossa sub-regions: Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Moppa, Ebenezer, Light Pass, and Greenock.
  • Grown on ancient decomposed ironstone, red clays, and loams over limestone bedrock, yielding immense fruit concentration balanced by savory mineral complexity.
  • Aged for approximately 30 months in fine-grained French oak barriques (approx. 50% new), marrying power and structural tension with seamless textural polish.
  • From the long, balanced 2023 Barossa growing season; a cellar benchmark with an optimal drinking window from 2028 through 2055+.

Tasting Notes

Opaque, saturated purple-black with luminous crimson-violet hues, it opens with pure, commanding aromas of black cherries, ripe blackberries, and cassis, seamlessly layered with dried violets, cracked black pepper, graphite, cured meats, dark cocoa, and hints of crushed ironstone. The palate is full-bodied, deep, and remarkably silky, framing concentrated dark fruit against seamless, fine-grained architectural tannins and racy natural acidity, culminating in an expansive, savory, and endlessly persistent finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in expansive Syrah or large Bordeaux stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1.5 to 2 hours prior to serving if enjoying in its youth to allow its dense fruit core, floral lift, and savory mineral nuances to fully unwind. Best enjoyed from 2028 through 2055+.
