Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 94+ pts
James Suckling 94 pts
- 94+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2020 Macán includes new plots and Garnacha and Graciano grapes, and they harvested a little earlier. They select their best plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and the grapes were cooled down for 24 hours before fermenting in oak vats with part of autochthonous yeasts. It matured 50% in new French oak barrels and 4,000-liter oak foudres for 16 months. The bottles are kept for three years before they're released. There were 98,835 bottles, 3,557 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in August 2022.
- 94 Points - JamesSuckling.com: Black plums, currants, black beans and touches of sandalwood, ash and cigar box on the nose. Juicy and full-bodied, with really fine-grained tannins and a long, linear finish that lingers. Really poised. Needs at least two more years to come around.
- The Rioja Alavesa Terroir: Crafted from meticulously managed old-vine Tempranillo parcels located in the sub-region of Rioja Alavesa (primarily around San Vicente de la Sonsierra). The high-altitude limestone and clay soils provide excellent drainage and cool nights, preserving acidity and imparting intense aromatic complexity.
- The Vega Sicilia & Rothschild Alliance: Macán represents the joint venture between Tempranillo master Vega Sicilia and Bordeaux legend Benjamin de Rothschild. Combining Spanish terroir with Bordeaux-style selection and aging regimens, the wine is matured in French oak barrels to achieve supreme polish, velvety texture, and exceptional longevity.

Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, opaque ruby-red with a bright crimson rim.
- Nose: Complex, elegant, and intensely aromatic. It opens with luxurious notes of ripe blackberry, dark plum, and black cherry, interwoven with crushed violet petals, tobacco leaf, vanilla bean, and a hint of sweet baking spices.
- Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and impeccably structured. The entry delivers a rich wave of dark fruit extract that glides across a velvety, polished mid-palate. Ultra-fine tannins and fresh, vibrant acidity provide seamless balance, driving into a long, sophisticated, and spice-laden finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glasses to allow its complex oak and dark fruit layers to uncoil.
- Decanting: A 1-to-2 hour decant is highly recommended if opening in its youth to soften the fine structure. Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2040+.
- Western Pairing: Roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, prime ribeye steak, venison medallions, or aged Manchego cheese.
- Asian Pairing: Slow-braised beef short ribs (Galbi-jim), Peking duck, cumin-spiced lamb skewers, or rich Taiwanese braised pork belly.
