Fresh Dark Berries, Graphite, Fine Spices, and Cool-Climate Rioja Precision

The 2021 Macán is a magnificent, tension-filled 100% Tempranillo red wine from the legendary partnership between Spain’s Vega Sicilia and France's Rothschild family. Benefiting from a remarkably balanced, cooler growing season in Rioja Alavesa, this grand vin showcases exceptional aromatic clarity and structural finesse. Complex aromas of fresh dark berries, black plums, graphite, balsam, and cocoa powder lead into a tightly wound, elegant palate. Framed by tense, chalky tannins and vibrant freshness, it represents one of the most exciting and finely tuned expressions of Macán to date.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 95 pts
James Suckling 96 pts
  • 95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2021 Macán is from a year that had above-average rainfall and some hail in June that lowered yields but good weather during harvest. It has 1% Graciano. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.8 and five grams of acidity. This year, they used 100% indigenous yeasts, and the élevage was in new barrels (50%) and 4,000-liter oak foudres and lasted 12 months, followed by another six months in 20,000-liter oak vats. This is serious, harmonious and subtle, more elegant than any vintage before, reflecting the freshness from the year. It's nicely built, very proportioned, with balance, freshness and abundant but fine-grained tannins. It's one of the finest if not the finest vintages to date. A total of 112,755 bottles, 3,354 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2023.
  • 96 Points - JamesSuckling.com: A depth of fresh dark berries and black plums is adorned with complex graphite, balsam, fine spices and cocoa powder with hints of bay leaves and minerals. Tannins are tense, nervy and chalky. Long and tightly wound but well-dissolved. One of the best examples of Macan. An exciting vintage. Drink from 2026 and beyond.
  • The Cool-Climate 2021 Vintage in Rioja: Sourced from meticulously selected parcel-based vineyards across Rioja Alavesa. The 2021 season provided an exceptionally balanced, moderate growing cycle that yielded moderate alcohol levels, striking aromatic clarity, and a cooler, more energetic profile than preceding warm years.
  • The Vega Sicilia & Rothschild Alliance: Macán is the embodiment of Tempos Vega Sicilia and Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s shared vision. Combining rigorous parcel management, low yields, native yeast fermentations, and expert French oak aging, it redefines modern grand-cru-style excellence in Rioja.

Highlights

  • 100% Tempranillo flagship red wine from premier parcels in Rioja Alavesa.
  • A stellar 2021 vintage awarded 96 points by James Suckling and 95 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
  • Crafted by Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia; a tightly wound, sophisticated expression built to evolve magnificently through 2040 and beyond.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, luminous ruby-red with youthful violet highlights.
  • Nose: Profound, layered, and cool-climate driven. It opens with fresh dark berries and black plums, complemented by complex layers of graphite, balsam, cocoa powder, fine sweet spices, and subtle hints of bay leaf.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and tightly wound. The entry is vibrant and energetic, anchored by a deep core of dark fruit. Tense, nervy, and chalky tannins provide exceptional structure, driving into a long, beautifully dissolved, and mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glassware to allow its complex graphite and dark fruit aromatics to expand.
  • Decanting: Highly recommended. Decant for 1.5 to 2 hours prior to serving to help soften its nervy, youthful structure. Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2042+.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted rack of lamb with herbs, prime ribeye steak, slow-braised venison, or aged hard cheeses like Manchego.
  • Asian Pairing: Korean-style braised short ribs (Galbi-jim), peking duck, cumin-spiced lamb skewers, or rich beef tenderloin in black pepper sauce.
