Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 95+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The current release is the 2021 Pintia, an exceptional vintage for them in Toro, and is one of their finest to date. It was cropped from a cooler year, and the wine has more freshness despite the 15% alcohol. It has a pH of 3.83 and 4.7 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats and matured partly in stainless steel (15%), barrels and foudres with 75% new oak, for 11 months. Three episodes of rain in September really made the vintage, something unusual in the zone, putting the icing on the cake of a cooler year. The wine is always more powerful than the wines from Ribera or Rioja, with more oomph, density and abundant tannins but with very good balance and freshness. It's a Pintia for the long haul, like a 2018 with more weight. There were 235,355 bottles, 13,944 half-bottles, 6,535 magnums and some larger formats produced. This was bottled in April 2023.
- 95 Points - James Suckling: Excellent and refined, showing deep, fresh blackberries with tar, dark minerals, cocoa powder and roasted spices. Full-bodied with tight but fine-grained tannins. Lasting well in the finish. Drink from 2027.
- The Extreme Toro Terroir: Located along the Duero River in San Román de Hornija and Pedrosa del Rey. The vineyards are planted at an elevation of 700 meters on poor, alluvial soils blanketed with smooth river pebbles (*cantos rodados*) over deep clay subsoils. This harsh continental climate produces tiny, concentrated berries with profound structural concentration and natural phenolic power.
- Vega Sicilia’s Vision of Finesse: Acquired by the Álvarez family in the late 1990s, Pintia redefined Toro by prioritizing elegance over raw extraction. Matured for roughly 12 months in mostly French (and some American) oak followed by extended bottle resting, the 2021 highlights an evolution toward earlier picking, gentle maceration, and refined mineral tension.
Highlights
- 100% Tinta de Toro from 40+ year-old vines grown by Tempos Vega Sicilia in the Toro DO.
- A benchmark continental vintage that marries deep structural muscle with striking aromatic poise.
- A cellar-worthy Spanish icon crafted for 15 to 25+ years of graceful evolution.
Tasting Notes
Opaque ruby-purple in color, it opens with pure, commanding aromas of ripe blackberries, black currants, and blueberries, interwoven with roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, crushed violets, and warm wild herbs. The palate is full-bodied, muscular, and seamless, layering dense, opulent black fruit over a framework of broad, fine-grained tannins and balancing acidity, concluding with a persistent, savory, and graphite-etched finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glassware.
- Decanting: Decant for 1 to 2 hours if opening young to allow its structure to soften. Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2042+.
