Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 94+ Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Ried Käferberg 1ÖTW is deep, pure, intense and complex on the saline nose that is reminiscent of crushed limestone rocks. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, with fine tannins and charming lemon bitters on the finish, this is a dense and mouth-filling yet still young Käferberg that benefits from a large glass and certainly further bottle aging. This is one of the greater Veltliners of the vintage, but it will further improve with bottle age. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in March 2024."
- 94 Points – James Suckling: "A cool and complex gruner veltliner. Lots of ripe gooseberries and green peppers plus a wealth of garden herb and leesy complexity on the nose, then a stack of Amalfi lemons and grapefruit on the quite compact, medium-bodied palate. Fine tannins support the long finish. Matured for almost a year in large neutral oak casks. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
- The Royal House of Kamptal: Helmed by the legendary Willi Bründlmayer, Weingut Bründlmayer stands as a global beacon for premium Austrian viticulture. The estate is highly celebrated for its commitment to organic farming and innovative vineyard architecture, notably pioneering the Lyra Y-shaped trellis system to capture immaculate light density. Located in Langenlois, their Ried Käferberg plot breaks all varietal norms, delivering an incredibly structured, multi-dimensional profile that easily matches elite white Burgundies or Grand Cru Chablis.
Highlights
- 100% Grüner Veltliner sourced entirely from the prestigious 1ÖTW Erste Lage (Grand Cru) Ried Käferberg vineyard, sitting at an elevated 310–345 meters.
- Grown on a rare, ancient geological formation of marine clay and calcareous deposits—a unique soil profile heavily mirroring Pomerol's top clay strata.
- Fermented spontaneously with wild vineyard yeasts in used, neutral 300-liter Austrian oak and acacia wood barrels, followed by 12 months of maturation in large 2,500-liter oak foudres.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright straw-yellow with shimmering silvery-green highlights.
- Nose: Profoundly complex, subtle, and multi-faceted. It opens with delicate aromas of fresh hay flowers, dried chamomile, and yeast leesy elements, leading into ripe quince jelly, citrus peel, ginger spice, white pepper, and a touch of wild honey.
- Palate: Bone-dry, full-bodied, and deeply concentrated. Textured layers of white apple, yellow pear, and fresh pineapple grip the palate with exceptional weight. The mouthfeel is densely woven and velvety, guided by fine, chalky phenols and balanced acidity, before drawing out into a very long finish characterized by an appetizing note of lemon bitters and wet stones.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cellar-cool at 10–12°C. Avoid serving it too cold, which freezes the unique acacia-wood texturing and exotic spice complexities.
- Decanting: Highly beneficial. Pouring this wine into a wide-bottomed decanter or a large Burgundy bowl glass for 20 minutes allows its dense, young phenolic shell to uncoil beautifully. Built with majestic aging potential to cellar easily for 10–15 years.
- Western Pairing: Classic Wiener Schnitzel, roasted goose or duck with stuffing, veal medallions, or rich pan-seared calf's liver.
- Asian Pairing: 泰式青咖喱雞 (Thai Green Chicken Curry), 蒜蓉大蝦炒麵 (Stir-Fried Garlic Prawn Noodles), or 薑蔥炒蟹 (Sautéed Crab with Ginger and Scallions).
