Collection: Clau de Nell
History Clau de Nell, situated in Ambillou within the Anjou region of the Loire Valley, France, has roots spanning over a century. The estate was acquired in 2000 by Claude and Nelly, who converted the vineyards to biodynamic cultivation. Facing financial difficulties by 2008, it was rescued by Anne-Claude Leflaive—renowned winemaker at Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy and a pioneer of biodynamic practices—and her partner Christian Jacques. They appointed Sylvain Potin as winemaker, drawing on his expertise gained in Chile and France. Following Leflaive's death in 2015, Christian Jacques continues to oversee operations, supported by Potin and a dedicated team, including Jacques' daughter Claire for sales and marketing. The domaine now encompasses 12 hectares, with additional leased parcels, focusing on commercial bottling since around 2011.
Viticulture Philosophy Clau de Nell adheres strictly to biodynamic principles, certified by Demeter since 2000, viewing the vineyard as a living organism in harmony with natural cycles. The 12-hectare estate features vines aged 30-90 years, planted on sandstone grit and red flint over tuffeau limestone, at elevations up to 101 meters amid forests and fields that foster biological activity. Varieties include Grolleau, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc, with low yields emphasizing terroir expression, biodiversity, and minimal intervention. Additional Chenin Blanc comes from a leased biodynamic parcel in Saumur. The philosophy, inspired by Leflaive, prioritizes respect for nature over resistance, integrating practices like cover crops and composting to enhance soil health and vine vigor.
Winemaking Techniques Winemaking at Clau de Nell employs minimal intervention to preserve purity and precision. Grapes are hand-harvested and often fermented with natural yeasts, incorporating whole-cluster bunches for some reds to enhance texture and aromatics. Reds, such as Cabernet Franc and Grolleau, undergo carbonic maceration or gentle extraction, followed by aging for 18 months in five-year-old Burgundy oak casks in a centuries-old limestone cellar. Chenin Blanc ferments in similar neutral oak, with extended lees contact for structure. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered on biodynamic "fruit days," ensuring vibrancy and terroir fidelity without added sulfites during vinification.
Critics and Journalist Praises Clau de Nell's wines are celebrated for their elegance, freshness, and biodynamic integrity. Jamie Goode lauded the 2015 Grolleau for its "detailed, spicy nose with red cherries and pepper," noting its "freshness and density." The 2015 Chenin Blanc was praised for its "lively intensity with pear, spice, and fine acidity." Decanter highlighted the 2012 Cabernet Franc for its "distinct freshness and soft tannins," crediting biodynamic practices. The Winedoctor described the domaine as a standout in the Loire, with Sylvain Potin's approach yielding "precise, terroir-driven" wines. Critics consistently commend the estate's commitment to Leflaive's legacy, earning high regard among sommeliers for aging potential and nuance.
