History
Founded in 1895 as a hunting preserve in Courthézon, Domaine Le Clos du Caillou was transformed into a vineyard by the Pouizin family in 1955. Initially dormant, the estate saw significant development under Claude Pouizin, with bottling beginning in the 1970s. Sylvie Vacheron took over in 1996, joined by her husband Jean-Denis Vacheron until his tragic death in 2002. Sylvie, with her children Marilou and Axel, and winemaker Bruno Gaspard, expanded the estate, notably acquiring Domaine de Panisse in 2020, adding 6.5 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 7.5 in Cotes-du-Rhône.
Viticulture Philosophy
The 53-hectare estate, with 9 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 44 in Cotes-du-Rhône, features sandy soils, safres, and galets roulés. Certified organic since 2010 and transitioning to biodynamics, the domaine cultivates Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and others for reds, and Clairette, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc for whites. Vines, some over 50 years old, are hand-harvested, and organic amendments and regular plowing eliminate herbicides, ensuring high-quality grapes.
Winemaking Techniques
Le Clos du Caillou employs minimal-intervention vinification, with hand-sorted grapes fermented using indigenous yeasts in cement tanks. Reds, like Les Quartz (85% Grenache, 15% Syrah), are aged in foudres, demi-muids, or barrels for 15-18 months, while whites, like Bouquet des Garrigues, use a mix of stainless steel and oak. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, emphasizing terroir-driven elegance, guided by consultant Philippe Cambie.
Critics and Journalist Praises
The domaine's Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are celebrated for finesse. The 2022 La Réserve, a Grenache-Mourvèdre blend, was deemed a “candidate for perfection” by critics, scoring 99/100 from Jeff Leve. Les Safres 2023 earned praise for its “floral, poivré” nose and silky tannins (Jeb Dunnuck). Bettane+Desseauve (3*/5) notes the estate's “high level of expression,” with Robert Parker calling its wines since 1998 among “the most exciting” tasted.
