Collection: Dunn Vineyards

Dunn Vineyards, perched atop Howell Mountain in California's Napa Valley, is a revered name in American winemaking, celebrated for its robust Cabernet Sauvignons. Founded in 1979 by Randy Dunn, a former Caymus winemaker, the family-run estate has cultivated a cult following over four decades. With Randy's son Mike now involved, alongside third-generation family members, Dunn remains a hands-on operation, farming 42 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon amid 200 acres of rugged woodland.

The winery's fame stems from its uncompromising style—producing structured, tannic wines built for longevity rather than instant gratification. Critics consistently laud this approach. Antonio Galloni has called Dunn's Howell Mountain Cabernet “one of the great wines, not just of California, but of the world,” praising its age-worthiness in top vintages. The estate's two offerings—the Howell Mountain Cabernet and the slightly softer Napa Valley bottling—both 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, are aged 30-32 months in French oak, yielding concentrated, cassis-rich profiles with moderate alcohol and firm acidity.

Dunn's terroir, marked by red-stony soils and volcanic ash, sits above Napa's fog line, fostering cooler days and warmer nights that accelerate ripening. This unique microclimate, paired with meticulous vineyard care, produces wines that critics like Wine Spectator have ranked among the best, with vintages like 1985 and 1986 earning Top 100 honors. Robert Parker and others have hailed Dunn as a pioneer of Napa's “golden age,” its muscular, classic style echoing the region's 1960s and ’70s heyday.

Despite limited production—around 5,000 cases annually—Dunn's reputation towers over larger peers. The Howell Mountain bottling, often needing 5-7 years to soften and capable of aging 30-40+ years, is a collector's prize, while the Napa Valley version offers earlier accessibility. This dedication to quality over trends has cemented Dunn Vineyards as a benchmark for Napa Cabernet, earning it a lasting legacy among wine enthusiasts and critics alike.
