Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 96 pts
- 95 Points - James Suckling: For a warm vintage this shows impressive freshness, with underlying depth and aromas of dark fruit, spices, potpourri, graphite and bay laurel. The palate is plush and rounded with a silken mouthfeel and fine tannins, leading to a fruit-driven, savory finish. There is plenty of early drinking appeal, despite its mountainous nature. This is the first time since 2011 that the wine is 100% Howell Mountain AVA. Delicious. Drink or hold.
- Mountain Meets Valley Synthesis: Composed of roughly 85% Howell Mountain estate fruit blended with select Napa Valley floor vineyards. The high-altitude red volcanic soils of Howell Mountain provide ferocious tannin and mineral drive, while valley-floor fruit adds plushness and mid-palate generosity.
- The Uncompromising Legacy of Randy Dunn: Founded in 1979, Dunn Vineyards is revered for rejecting modern trends toward high alcohol and soft tannins. Extended French oak barrel aging and non-interventional winemaking yield Cabernet Sauvignons legendary for 30+ year cellaring potential.
Highlights
- 100% Cabernet Sauvignon featuring a heavy core of high-altitude Howell Mountain estate fruit.
- A radiant 2022 release packed with cassis, crushed graphite, sweet tobacco, and firm, chewy tannins.
- Crafted by the iconic Dunn Vineyards, boasting 25+ years of cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep garnet-purple with dark violet highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Classic, savory, and powerful. It opens with aromas of ripe cassis, black cherries, and plum, accompanied by crushed graphite, dried sage, tobacco leaf, and subtle cedarwood.
- Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and deeply structured. The entry brings a dense wave of dark berry sap that glides across firm, architectural tannins, supported by fresh mountain acidity and a long, mineral-driven finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C to allow its fine aromatics and structured palate to uncoil gracefully.
- Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is highly recommended if opening young to let its mountain tannins soften. Cellar-worthy through 2047+.
- Western Pairing: Prime dry-aged ribeye steak, roasted rack of lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef short ribs, or game meats.
- Asian Pairing: Dongpo braised pork belly, Xinjiang cumin lamb skewers, Mongolian beef, or wok-fried black pepper beef.
