Collection: Helan Qingxue Vineyard

History Helan Qingxue Vineyard was founded in 2005 in Yinchuan, Ningxia, China, by Rong Jian, Wang Fengyu, and winemaker Zhang Jing, with Professor Li Demei joining as consultant in 2006. Named after the scenic "sunshine and snow on Helan Mountains," it was among Ningxia's first boutique wineries, featuring an underground cellar. The estate spans 23 hectares without expansion. Its breakthrough came in 2011 when the 2009 Jia Bei Lan Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon won the International Trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the first for a Chinese wine, elevating Ningxia's global profile. The winery marked its 10th anniversary in 2015 with a vertical tasting and celebrates its 20th in 2025.

Viticulture Philosophy Located in the Helan Mountain East foothills, the 23-hectare estate emphasizes sustainable practices and terroir respect, adjusting soil pH and trialing varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Malbec, and Petit Manseng. The philosophy prioritizes quality over scale, with low yields, earlier harvests for freshness, and minimal intervention to harness Ningxia's semi-arid climate, diurnal shifts, and gravelly soils, fostering elegant, balanced grapes aligned with regional conservation regulations.

Winemaking Techniques Helan Qingxue crafts Bordeaux-style reds and whites with elegance in mind. Grapes undergo malolactic fermentation and indigenous yeast vinification, with reduced new oak for subtlety. The Jia Bei Lan series, including 100% Cabernet Sauvignon reserves, ages in French oak for structure and harmony. Techniques include parcel selection and lees aging, yielding complex yet seamless wines. An upcoming traditional-method sparkling wine expands the portfolio, maintaining low intervention for purity.

Critics and Journalist Praises Helan Qingxue's wines have redefined Chinese viticulture. The 2009 Jia Bei Lan earned the 2011 DWWA International Trophy, with Sarah Kemp affirming the judges’ decision post-2015 vertical tasting. CH’NG Poh Tiong praised the 2015 Jia Bei Lan Reserve (95 points, Gold at 2019 DWWA) for its “ripe, intense blackcurrant, liquorice and star anise flavours cloaked in silky tannins... seamless and harmonious.” Critics laud the estate's balanced, Old World-influenced style, with consistent awards highlighting its freshness, complexity, and Ningxia's potential.
