From Helan Qingxue Vineyard in China's Ningxia region at the foot of the Helan Mountains, the Jia Bei Lan Estate 2018 is a refined blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Gernischt (genetically related to Carmenère), sourced from a 2.6-hectare demonstration vineyard at 1,138 meters elevation on pollution-free soils that capture the area's sunlight and temperature range for premium viticulture. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2018 vintage—characterized by moderate conditions yielding concentrated yet fresh fruit—undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions, followed by aging in oak barrels to enhance structure and complexity. Founded in 2005 by Rong Jian and Wang Fengyu with winemaker Zhang Jing and consultant Professor Li Demei, this Second Growth estate produces around 60,000 bottles annually, emphasizing respect for nature and soil, yielding a deep ruby wine with garnet edges and harmonious depth.

Tasting Notes A classic Ningxia red with a winning nose of fresh black and red currants laced with clove-like spice and a hint of red chili pepper, delivering elegant juiciness wrapped in firm, chalky tannins with poised restraint and precision. The nose reveals fresh black and red currants, clove-like spice, and subtle red chili pepper, with hints of salted plums, dried meat, and olives. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and poised, with vibrant acidity, fine texture, and flavors of dark fruit, roasted spices, and mineral earthiness, leading to a long, balanced finish.

Awards and Accolades The 2018 Jia Bei Lan Estate earned 91 points from James Suckling for its elegant juiciness and precise structure.

Serving and Cellaring Serve at 16-18°C with 45-60 minutes of decanting to enhance aromas. Ideal with grilled beef, roasted lamb, or aged cheeses. Enjoy now through 2035, developing greater leather and earthy nuances over time.
