Collection: San Filippo
History Azienda Agricola San Filippo, located in Montalcino, Tuscany, was founded in the early 1970s, with its first Brunello di Montalcino produced in 1977. Situated in the northern part of the appellation near the iconic Biondi Santi estate, the property spans 22 hectares, of which 11 are dedicated to vines. The estate was acquired and renovated by Roberto Giannelli, who modernized facilities while preserving traditional elements. Under his ownership, San Filippo has emerged as a boutique producer of Brunello di Montalcino, emphasizing quality from four estate vineyards.
Viticulture Philosophy The vineyards—Le Lucére (northeast-facing), La Storta (northeast), Le Raffiche (north), and La Smarrita (southwest)—benefit from diverse exposures and elevations, contributing to balanced ripeness. San Filippo practices organic farming, with low yields and meticulous grape selection to express the terroir of Montalcino's mineral-rich soils. The focus remains on Sangiovese Grosso, prioritizing elegance, freshness, and site-specific character in a region known for its varied microclimates.
Winemaking Techniques Winemaking combines tradition with modern precision under consulting oenologist Paolo Caciorgna. Grapes undergo rigorous selection, fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, and aging primarily in large Slavonian and Allier oak casks (with some barriques for Rosso). Brunello ages extensively to achieve harmony, while the flagship Le Lucére Riserva receives additional refinement from select parcels. Minimal intervention ensures polished tannins and vibrant fruit expression.
Critics and Journalist Praises San Filippo's wines, particularly Le Lucére Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, have garnered exceptional acclaim. The 2015 Le Lucére ranked #3 in Wine Spectator's Top 100. Recent vintages earn consistent high scores: James Suckling awarded 96 points to select releases for intensity and finesse, while Vinous and Wine Advocate praise the estate's structured elegance and aging potential. Critics commend Roberto Giannelli's renovations for elevating San Filippo among Montalcino's refined, approachable Brunellos.
