San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Le Lucere 2016 is a refined, powerful Brunello from one of the estate’s prime single vineyards on the eastern side of Montalcino, offering layered aromas of cherry, raspberry, rose, tobacco and spice over a taut mineral core. The palate is full‑bodied yet polished, with ripe red and black fruit, savoury herbs and fine, chalky tannins leading to a long, focused finish; serve at 16–18°C and enjoy now or cellar for two decades.

Le Lucere is a south‑east‑facing cru at about 300–350 metres altitude with marl and galestro soils that give Sangiovese both richness and lift, and San Filippo vinifies it separately as the estate’s flagship Brunello. In 2016—a widely acclaimed, classic vintage in Montalcino—carefully selected Sangiovese grapes were fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks and then aged around 24–30 months in medium‑sized Slavonian and French oak, followed by extended bottle ageing before release.

This regimen allows the wine to marry concentrated fruit and structure with aromatic complexity and finesse, showing the elegance and balance typical of the best 2016 Brunelli. The combination of site, vintage and meticulous élevage places Le Lucere among the most sought‑after modern Brunellos.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Perfumed bouquet of ripe cherry, raspberry and plum with rose and violet, plus nuances of tobacco, licorice, leather, sweet spices and underbrush.

  • Palate: Dense yet very precise, delivering flavours of red cherry, black cherry and blackberry intertwined with savoury herbs, cedar and mineral notes, framed by firm but fine‑grained tannins and lively acidity.

  • Finish: Long, layered and refined, with lingering red fruit, spice, balsamic hints and a saline, chalky edge that underlines the Lucere cru.

Awards and Accolades
For this specific wine and vintage, Wine Spectator awarded San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere 2016 a score of 96 points, praising its purity of cherry and raspberry fruit, floral and spice notes, and a firm, well‑integrated tannic backbone, calling it “elegant and intense” with a long, complex finish. Other leading critics also rate it very highly: Wine Advocate and James Suckling both place it in the mid‑ to high‑90s, highlighting its energy, depth of fruit and refined structure; these reviews confirm the 2016 Le Lucere as one of the standout Brunellos of the vintage.

Serving and Cellaring
Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy‑style glasses and decant for 1–2 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the floral, spicy bouquet to fully open. The wine pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb, game, rich ragù pastas, aged pecorino and mushroom dishes, and it is built to age 15–25 years from vintage, developing notes of dried cherry, leather, truffle and forest floor while retaining its vibrant core.

Technical Details
