Chiseled Limestone Purity and Radiant Côte Chalonnaise Finesse

Crafted by Stéphane Aladame—the undisputed pioneer who single-handedly elevated Montagny to world-class status—"Les Vignes Derrière" represents an exceptionally pure, high-vibrational expression of Premier Cru Chardonnay. Tucked onto a steep, stony hillside, this site yields a wine that completely steps past the heavy, over-oaked templates of lesser white Burgundies. The 2022 vintage delivers a masterclass in mineral focus, exploding with an intellectual bouquet of crisp green apples, white peaches, lemongrass, and white blossoms, layered over an unmistakable undertone of crushed chalk. It is a medium-bodied, remarkably taut white wine that slices across the palate with a chiseled line of limestone acidity and a long, intensely saline finish.

Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation

  • The King of Montagny: Stéphane Aladame launched his domain in 1992 at the incredibly young age of 22. In a region historically dominated by large cooperatives, his obsessive devotion to single-vineyard, low-intervention viticulture put Montagny on the map for fine wine collectors. Today, he is widely regarded as the top producer in the appellation, crafting wines that routinely rival far more expensive bottlings from the Côte de Beaune.
  • 90 Points Star Rating ★★★★☆ – Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Clean and clear in colour, with fresh white fruit, a medium-bodied Montagny. The crystalline finish in fact extends further than Les Platières, giving the Vignes Derrieres the edge. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted Mar 2024."

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay hand-harvested from old vines inside the Montagny 1er Cru "Les Vignes Derrière" climate.
  • Rooted in exceptionally shallow, stony Kimmeridgian limestone soils that impart a striking mineral and saline quality.
  • Fermented and aged for 10–12 months in neutral, seasoned French oak barrels to preserve pristine terroir transparency without adding sweet wood flavors.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright pale gold with clear, straw-green reflections.
  • Nose: Intensely focused, crisp, and vertical, opening with aromas of granny smith apple, lemon peel, and white peach, layered complexly against wet flint, white almond skin, lemongrass, and acacia flowers.
  • Palate: Bone-dry, medium-bodied, and highly chiseled. A pure wave of citrus skin and orchard fruits floods the entry, instantly structured by a piercing, energetic vein of chalky limestone acidity. The mid-palate shows excellent density from fine-lees contact, finishing bone-dry, mouthwatering, and highly saline.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 10–12°C. Avoid serving ice-cold, which mutes its delicate floral perfumes and compresses its fine limestone texture.
  • Decanting: A brief 10-to-15 minute breathe in a wide Burgundy glass helps its youthful mineral energy unfold beautifully. Showing spectacular balance for immediate consumption, with the architecture to cellar nicely over the next 6–10 years.
  • Western Pairing: Pan-seared sole meunière, fresh goat cheese crostini, grilled chicken with lemon-herb reductions, or fresh oysters.
  • Asian Pairing: 水晶蝦餃皇 (Premium Steamed Prawn Dumplings / Har Gow), 蒜蓉粉絲蒸大扇貝 (Steamed Scallops with Garlic and Glass Noodles), or 清蒸石斑魚 (Steamed Garoupa with Soy Sauce).
