Ripe Yellow Peach, Toasted Hazelnut, and Benchmark Meursault Charmes Opulence

The 2022 Domaine Ballot-Millot Meursault 1er Cru "Les Charmes" is a opulent, masterfully balanced, and velvety white Burgundy from one of the most famous Premier Cru vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Sourced from ancient vines in Charmes-Dessus, it marries generous mid-palate richness with laser-focused mineral drive. Soaring aromas of ripe yellow peach, poached pear, white floral blossom, toasted hazelnut, and crushed chalk open into a medium-to-full-bodied, satiny palate backed by vibrant natural acidity and a long, resonant finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Jasper Morris MW 90-94 pts
  • 90-94 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): The Charmes shows higher alcohol, more lees and some need of a light sulphuring. Mid lemon yellow, and the nose has a ripe apple note, after a late malolactic and could use freshening. These are temporary details. The situation dries out the mouth a little bit for now, but there is certainly an adequate volume of fruit and I am sure this wine will turn out much at the top end of this range. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Oct 2023.
  • The Iconic Charmes-Dessus Terroir: Ballot-Millot’s holdings in "Les Charmes" are located in the upper section (Charmes-Dessus), directly adjacent to Perrières. The shallow, stony limestone soils here grant the wine the classic opulent flesh of Charmes combined with the laser-like mineral backbone typically found in Perrières.
  • Masterful Craftsmanship by Charles Ballot: Cultivated organically from old vines, the grapes undergo whole-bunch pressing and slow fermentation in French oak barrels (~25% new). Charles Ballot’s meticulous, low-intervention winemaking achieves a breathtaking balance between rich texture and chiseled precision.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay harvested from old Premier Cru vines in Charmes-Dessus, Meursault.
  • A radiant 2022 release bursting with yellow peach, poached pear, toasted hazelnut, and crushed chalk minerality.
  • Crafted by Domaine Ballot-Millot, offering 12 to 18+ years of exceptional cellar potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Pale straw-gold with luminous greenish-yellow reflections.
  • Nose: Expansive, complex, and inviting. It opens with aromas of ripe yellow peach, poached pear, and citrus zest, accompanied by acacia flowers, fresh pastry, toasted hazelnut, and crushed limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and satiny. The entry delivers an opulent wave of stone fruit sap that glides across a rounded mid-palate, propelled by fresh natural acidity into a long, mineral-tinged finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 11–13°C to allow its opulent texture and complex aromatics to unfold gracefully.
  • Decanting: A 30-minute decant helps open its rich layers if enjoying young. Best enjoyed through 2040+.
  • Western Pairing: Butter-poached lobster, pan-seared sea scallops, roasted Bresse chicken with truffles, or veal sweetbreads.
  • Asian Pairing: Steamed spotted grouper with ginger and scallions, braised abalone, butter-fried king prawns, or Hainanese chicken rice.
