Ripe Black Cherries, Smoked Plum, Cocoa Nibs, and Benchmark Stellenbosch Pinotage Royalty

The 2023 Beeslaar Pinotage is a landmark, deeply structured, and masterfully refined red wine widely regarded as the ultimate expression of South Africa's signature grape. Crafted by legendary winemaker Abrie Beeslaar from single-vineyard old vines in the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch region, this flagship bottling combines effortless power with exquisite freshness. Soaring aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plum, crushed blackberries, cocoa nibs, sweet tobacco, and crushed slate lead into a full-bodied, satiny palate framed by fine-grained, polished tannins and an endlessly long, savory finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 93 pts
  • 93 Points - JamesSuckling.com: Chocolate, raisins, prunes, vanilla and cinnamon stick on the nose of this big, bold red. It’s full-bodied and concentrated with fleshy tannins and heaps of spiced fruit and plum jam character. Hedonistic this year. Drink or hold.
  • Simonsberg-Stellenbosch Terroir: Sourced from a single vineyard block of mature bush vines planted in the weathered shale and decomposed granite soils of Simonsberg. This famed micro-climate combines intense solar radiation with cooling False Bay ocean breezes, granting Pinot Noir-like perfume and Cabernet-like power.
  • Mastery by Abrie Beeslaar: Abrie Beeslaar, multiple-time Winemaker of the Year and long-time cellar master at Kanonkop, created this personal project to push Pinotage to its absolute zenith. Fermented in traditional open-top wooden fermenters and aged slowly in oak, it completely redefines Pinotage as an elegant, age-worthy fine wine.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinotage harvested from single-vineyard bush vines in Simonsberg-Stellenbosch.
  • A radiant 2023 vintage packed with black cherries, dark plum, cocoa nibs, sweet tobacco, and graphite minerality.
  • Crafted by world-renowned winemaker Abrie Beeslaar, offering 15 to 25+ years of exceptional cellar potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-purple with brilliant crimson highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Complex, fragrant, and dark. It opens with aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plum, and blackberry compote, accompanied by cocoa nibs, subtle dried fynbos herbs, sweet tobacco, and crushed slate.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and satiny. The entry brings an expansive wave of dark berry sap that glides across a seamless mid-palate, held together by polished, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity into a long, mineral-driven finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow its complex aromatics and structure to uncoil fully.
  • Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if opening young. Cellar-worthy through 2045+.
  • Western Pairing: Braised beef short ribs, roasted venison saddle with berry reduction, rack of lamb, or South African Braai (barbecued steaks).
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Korean braised short ribs (Galbi-jim), Taiwanese braised pork belly, or charcoal-grilled wagyu.
