Crunchy Red Currants, Rose Petals, Cardamom, and Burgundian Single-Slope Peñafiel Grace

The 2021 Bendito Destino "El Olmar" is a groundbreaking, ultra-limited red wine from centennial bush vines in Canalejas de Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). Sourced from a single east-facing slope combining four contiguous centennial plots planted between 1920 and 1930 at over 930 meters elevation, this inaugural release by sommelier-turned-winemaker Terry Kandyna is a field blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Valenciano, and Albillo Mayor. Soaring aromas of crunchy red berries, wild blueberries, lavender, rose petals, orange peel, and cardamom lead into a medium-bodied, crystalline palate framed by filigree tannins and an exceptionally vibrant, mineral-driven finish.

Terroir & Winemaking Craft

  • High-Altitude Centenary "El Olmar" Single-Slope Terroir: Sourced from a single east-facing slope comprised of four contiguous plots (0.80 hectares total) in Canalejas de Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). Planted between 1920 and 1930 at an elevation of over 930 meters, the cool night breezes and sandy limestone soils endow the wine with remarkable aromatic lift and electric tension.
  • Low-Intervention Micro-Vinification: Crafted by former UK Sommelier of the Year Terry Kandyna, this field blend of red and white varieties is co-fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, followed by 16 months of maturation in second-passage Taransaud French oak barrels. An ultra-limited production (under 600 bottles) focused on Burgundian elegance over extraction.

Highlights

  • Single-slope field blend (Tempranillo, Garnacha, Valenciano, Albillo Mayor) from 4 centennial plots at 930m elevation in Peñafiel.
  • A radiant 2021 release packed with crunchy red berries, wild blueberries, rose petals, orange peel, and herbal smokiness.
  • Crafted by Terry Kandyna (Bendito Destino), offering 10 to 20+ years of graceful cellar development.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright, luminous ruby-garnet of medium opacity with pink-tinged rim.
  • Nose: Intensely floral, complex, and lifted. It opens with aromas of crunchy red berries, wild blueberries, and sour cherry, accompanied by rose petals, lavender, candied orange peel, cardamom spice, and a veil of subtle herbal smokiness.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and Burgundian. The entry delivers a pure, focused wave of fresh berry sap that glides across an energetic mid-palate, held together by filigree tannins and vibrant mountain acidity into a long, mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C in Burgundy-style glasses to favor its delicate floral aromatics and silky texture.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute aeration helps open its fragrant layers. Best enjoyed now through 2041+.
  • Western Pairing: Roast duck breast, pan-seared pork loin, sauteed wild mushrooms with truffles, or rack of lamb.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Soy-sauce chicken, Taiwanese braised pork belly, or Cantonese roast goose.
