Ripe Red Cherries, Blood Orange, Crushed Herbs, and High-Altitude Peñafiel Single-Vineyard Finesse

The 2023 Bendito Destino "San Roque" is a rare, deeply expressive single-vineyard red wine from ancient bush vines in Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). Sourced from the historic high-altitude "San Roque" plot characterized by limestone-rich soils, this low-intervention cuvée co-ferments Tinto Fino alongside ancient local white and red field-blend varieties. Soaring aromas of wild red cherries, sour strawberries, blood orange peel, wild thyme, black tea, and crushed stone lead into a medium-to-full-bodied, crystalline palate framed by fine, chalky tannins and an endlessly long, mineral-driven finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 94 pts
James Suckling 96 pts
  • 94 Points - Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2023 San Roque comes from a plot of very old vines in Peñafiel at 760 meters in altitude and not too far from the river, a flat place with alluvial soils planted with a field blend of Tempranillo. It fermented in an open-top barrel with indigenous yeasts and 40% whole bunches. It's quite perfumed. This is a little more austere, subtle and elegant, with a vibrant palate and marked notes of blood oranges. It's fine-boned, with contained ripeness. Only 380 bottles produced. It was bottled in late January 2025.
  • 96 Points - JamesSuckling.com: Lightly cloudy. Beautiful, racy nose of stemmy cherries. berries, pomegranates, herbs and damp earth. Juicy and tactile, with savory tannins and fresh wild berry flavors. Tense, acidity-driven and really succulent. Not a Ribera del Duero you’d expect, but more like a pinot or a gamay, with succulence and elegance. Drink or hold.
  • Single-Vineyard "San Roque" Limestone Terroir: Sourced entirely from ancient bush-trained vines in the historic "San Roque" paraje near Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). The high-altitude plot features limestone-dominated soils, providing vibrant floral perfume, chalky tannic grip, and mineral tension.
  • Artisanal Low-Intervention Micro-Cuvée: Co-fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts in neutral vessels, then matured gently in seasoned French oak barrels. Terry Kandyna's minimalist approach showcases unblemished fruit purity, chalky texture, and authentic mountain terroir transparency.

Highlights

  • Single-vineyard field blend from old bush-trained vines in the "San Roque" paraje, Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero).
  • A radiant 2023 release packed with wild red cherries, sour strawberries, blood orange peel, thyme, and limestone dust.
  • Crafted by Terry Kandyna (Bendito Destino), offering 10 to 20+ years of cellar evolution.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, translucent ruby-crimson with bright violet reflections.
  • Nose: Complex, lifted, and herbal. It opens with aromas of wild red cherries, sour strawberries, and pomegranates, accompanied by blood orange zest, wild thyme, black tea, and crushed white limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and chiseled. The entry brings a pure wave of red fruit sap that flows across a chalky mid-palate, held together by fine-grained tannins and electric mountain acidity into a long, mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C to highlight its fresh berry acidity and herbal aromatics.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended if enjoying young. Best enjoyed now through 2043+.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted leg of lamb, pan-seared duck breast, roasted pork loin with herbs, or wild mushroom risotto.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Korean braised short ribs (Galbi-jim), Taiwanese braised pork belly, or Cantonese roast goose.
