Ripe Dark Plums, Wild Thyme, Orange Zest, and Sovereign Peñafiel Single-Vineyard Depth

The 2022 Bendito Destino "Los Castaños" is a deeply expressive, single-vineyard red wine from ancient bush vines planted in Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). Sourced from the historic "Los Castaños" paraje, characterized by deep gravel and sandy limestone soils, this low-intervention cuvée co-ferments Tinto Fino alongside ancient local white and red varieties. Soaring aromas of ripe dark cherries, wild blackberries, orange peel, wild thyme, black tea, and crushed stone lead into a medium-to-full-bodied, crystalline palate framed by fine, chalky tannins and an endlessly long, mineral-driven finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 93 pts
  • 93 Points - Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2022 Los Castaños, which means "the chestnut trees" in Spanish but is also the nickname of the people from Canalejas, is a blend from different plots in their village planted with a field blend dominated by Tinto Fino with Garnacha, Bobal, Albillo, Malvasía and Pirulés. The grapes were hand-destemmed, and they used around 35% of the stems for the fermentation. It matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for 24 months. Part of the wine was made as a deep colored clarete, which was blended back into the red to achieve less extraction and craft a wine that is fresh despite the warmth of the vintage. This has a serious and harmonious profile that's a little Chianti-like, lifted, balanced and nuanced. It comes in at 13.6% alcohol and with a pH of 3.5, which is quite amazing and balanced for the conditions of the year. I love the elegance and the balance. 2,590 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024.
  • Single-Vineyard "Los Castaños" Terroir: Sourced entirely from old bush-trained vines in the historic "Los Castaños" paraje near Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). The soil features deep gravelly sand over a limestone base, providing rich aromatic complexity balanced by electric mineral tension.
  • Artisanal Low-Intervention Micro-Cuvée: Co-fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts in neutral vessels, then matured gently in seasoned French oak barrels. Terry Kandyna's minimalist approach showcases unblemished fruit purity, fine chalky tannins, and authentic mountain terroir transparency.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, translucent ruby-crimson with bright violet reflections.
  • Nose: Complex, lifted, and mineral. It opens with aromas of dark cherries, wild blackberries, and plum, accompanied by blood orange zest, wild thyme, black tea, and crushed stone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and chiseled. The entry brings a pure wave of dark berry sap that flows across a chalky mid-palate, held together by fine-grained tannins and energetic mountain acidity into a long, mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C to highlight its fresh berry acidity and herbal aromatics.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended if enjoying young. Best enjoyed now through 2042+.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted leg of lamb, pan-seared duck breast, roasted pork loin with herbs, or wild mushroom risotto.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Korean braised short ribs (Galbi-jim), Taiwanese braised pork belly, or Cantonese roast goose.
