Wild Strawberries, Sour Cherries, Blood Orange, and Century-Old 100% Garnacha Purity

The 2022 Bendito Destino "Piedra Mediana" is an extraordinary, ultra-rare 100% Garnacha red wine sourced from a tiny 0.20-hectare single parcel planted in 1908 high up at 910 meters elevation in Peñafiel (Ribera del Duero). Unique as the winery's only single-varietal plot, this low-intervention expression by sommelier-turned-winemaker Terry Kandylis features an ancient, small-clustered Garnacha clone grown on northeast-facing stony soils. Soaring aromas of crunchy wild strawberries, sour red cherries, pomegranates, blood orange peel, wild thyme, and crushed stone lead into a medium-bodied, crystalline palate framed by fine, chalky tannins and electric mountain acidity.

Terroir & Winemaking Craft

  • 100% Centenarian Garnacha ("Piedra Mediana"): Sourced entirely from a tiny 0.20-hectare single plot planted in 1908 at 910 meters elevation with a northeast orientation. It is Bendito Destino's only single-varietal parcel, featuring an ancient Garnacha clone with very small clusters that yield extraordinary natural acidity, tension, and berry purity.
  • Artisanal Low-Intervention Micro-Vinification: Hand-harvested from century-old bush vines and fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral vessels, then matured gently in seasoned French oak. Winemaker Terry Kandylis focuses on pure, unblemished varietal and terroir expression without heavy extraction or oak interference.

Highlights

  • 100% single-varietal Garnacha from centenarian bush vines (planted 1908) at 910m elevation in Peñafiel.
  • A radiant 2022 release packed with wild strawberries, sour red cherries, blood orange zest, thyme, and chalky minerality.
  • Crafted by Terry Kandylis (Bendito Destino), offering 8 to 15+ years of cellar evolution.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Translucent, radiant ruby-garnet with bright violet-pink reflections.
  • Nose: Intensely fragrant, floral, and lifted. It opens with aromas of wild red berries, sour cherry, and pomegranate, accompanied by blood orange zest, rose petals, dried Mediterranean herbs, and crushed limestone dust.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and linear. The entry brings a pure wave of tart red fruit sap that flows across an energetic mid-palate, held together by fine-grained chalky tannins and electric mountain acidity into a clean, long, saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C to highlight its crisp red fruit purity and vibrant aromatics.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute aeration helps open its fresh layers. Best enjoyed now through 2037+.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast, pan-seared pork chops, grilled lamb chops, or wild mushroom tart.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Soy-sauce chicken, Taiwanese braised pork belly, or Cantonese roast goose.
