Majestic, Pure, and Electric with Mineral Tension

Widely hailed as the undisputed king of Chablis Premier Crus, Montée de Tonnerre shares the exact same south-southeast facing slope and Kimmeridgian limestone vein as the Grand Cru hill. The 2023 Domaine Billaud-Simon expression is a tour de force of mineral engineering. It reveals a brilliant, classic nose of iodine, lemon curd, white acacia blossoms, and crushed chalk. Remarkably dense and tightly wound, it drives across the palate with immense crystalline focus and energy, answering the natural sun of the 2023 vintage with a soaring, electric, and intensely saline finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound [92] pts
Jasper Morris [90-93] pts
  • 92 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): "An exuberantly floral-suffused nose displays additional aromas of tidal pool, citrus zest and plenty of iodine character. The racy and notably finer, if less powerful and generous, middle weight flavors flash evident minerality on the youthfully austere bitter lemon-inflected finish that goes on and on. Excellent potential here."
  • 90-93 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "A blend from plots in Montée de Tonnerre, Chapelot and Pied d’Aloup, the latter planted in 1944. Glowing lemon yellow. A high quality nose with the spicy liquorice style of ripeness rather than tropical fruit. All in stainless steel. Becomes buttery at the finish, but there are grape tannins to retain the tensions. The high concentration of dry extract gives a little bitterness to finish, which will subsequently integrate. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jul 2024."
  • The Peerless Premier Cru: Montée de Tonnerre is universally considered the top Premier Cru vineyard in Chablis. Separated from the Grand Cru Blanchot only by a narrow valley, it drinks like a Grand Cru at a fraction of the cost. Its south-southeast exposure guarantees fantastic ripeness, while its razor-sharp Kimmeridgian soils infuse the grapes with an intense mineral character.
  • Stainless Steel Mastery: To honor the electric, pure identity of this specific parcel, Domaine Billaud-Simon avoids wood completely for this vintage. Vinified entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine preserves its chiseled, crystalline acidity and pristine sea-breeze undertones unhindered.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay harvested from the domain's prized holdings in Chablis's finest Premier Cru, Montée de Tonnerre.
  • Billaud-Simon is celebrated for its laser-focused, ultra-pure style that captures the essence of right-bank limestone.
  • An absolute cellar centerpiece, possessing the power, volume, and balance to comfortably age for over a decade.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Luminous white-gold core with brilliant, emerald reflections.
  • Nose: Remarkably airy, cool, and architectural. It displays deep aromas of mineral reduction, sea breeze, and iodine, evolving beautifully to reveal lime zest, orange peel, and white acacia blossoms.
  • Palate: Bone-dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and outstandingly dense. The palate possesses sophisticated volume, showcasing crisp notes of lemon curd, lime flesh, and white peach. The rich weight is sharply reined in by a chiseled, towering spine of electric acidity, driving into a highly persistent, mineral-driven, and explosive finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 11–13°C. Avoid ice-cold serving temperatures, as the immense volume and sophisticated floral subtleties need a slight chill to expand properly.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is highly recommended if enjoying in its youth to allow the tightly coiled mineral core to unfurl. This wine is structured to age gracefully in the cellar through 2036.
  • Western Pairing: Butter-poached lobster tails, roasted turbot with beurre blanc, grilled langoustines, or premium pan-seared scallops.
  • Asian Pairing: Premium steamed garoupa with ginger and superior soy sauce (清蒸石斑魚), stir-fried crystal shrimp (水晶蝦仁), or sautéed lobster with ginger and scallions.
