Wild Red Currants, Exotic Spices, and Aristocratic Clos de Bèze Majesty

The 2021 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a monumental, ethereal, and aristocratic red Burgundy from one of the most revered vineyard sites on earth. Sourced from ancient vines planted in 1912 and 1972 on limestone-rich upper slopes, it seamlessly marries intense aromatic complexity with cool-vintage transparency. Soaring aromas of wild red currants, crunchy dark cherries, crushed rose petals, orange peel, and exotic five-spice lead into a full-bodied, satiny palate framed by ultra-fine, chalky tannins and an endlessly long, mineral-driven finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 93-96 pts
Wine Advocate 93-95 pts
Jasper Morris MW 94-97 pts
  • 93-96 Points (Don't Miss) - Allen Meadows (Burghound): A pungent nose of firm reduction and relatively prominent wood precedes simply gorgeously textured big-bodied and powerful flavors that are blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that coats the palate as well as the very firm tannins that shape the hugely long, balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is superb with class and an innate poise.
  • 93-95 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2021 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is also a notable success, wafting from the glass with aromas of rich smoky berries, cherries and forest floor, followed by a full-bodied, ample and layered palate that's textural and multidimensional, combining the typical mid-palate volume of this site with the charm and delicacy of the vintage to compelling effect.
  • 94-97 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): The Clos e Bèze returned a full crop of 35 hl/ha. Crimson purple, a light reduction fractionally hides the fruit on the nose for the moment. Magical on the palate, raspberry and roses, a slightly eggy touch at the back from the late malolactic fermentation, I think. A little more structure behind and great length. A very complete wine. Drink from 2029-2040. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted Dec 2022.
  • Ancient Vines on Hallowed Terroir: Bruno Clair owns almost one hectare in Clos de Bèze, situated on the steep upper slope where thin, iron-rich chalk soils cover hard Bajocian limestone. The oldest vines here were planted in 1912 and 1972, granting exceptional depth, spice, and aromatic intensity.
  • Artisanal Craftsmanship by Bruno Clair: Farmed organically with low yields and partial whole-cluster inclusion. The combination of ancient vines and gentle, low-intervention winemaking captures the sheer nobility, spicy perfume, and long cellaring grace of this mythical Grand Cru.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from ancient Grand Cru vines (planted up to 1912) in Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.
  • A radiant 2021 release packed with wild red currants, crunchy dark cherries, rose petals, orange zest, and exotic spices.
  • Crafted by Domaine Bruno Clair, offering 20 to 35+ years of monumental cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, glowing crimson-ruby with luminous purple reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Soaring, complex, and intensely perfumed. It opens with aromas of wild red currants, raspberries, and dark cherries, accompanied by crushed rose petals, blood orange peel, raw cocoa, and five-spice powder.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and beautifully satiny. The entry brings an ethereal wave of red berry sap that glides across a structured mid-palate, held in balance by fine-grained tannins and vibrant limestone acidity into an endlessly long, majestic finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C in large Burgundy glasses to allow its complex Grand Cru aromatics to uncoil.
  • Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is strongly recommended if opening young. Cellar-worthy through 2055+.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted rack of lamb, venison saddle with berry reduction, beef Bourguignon, or wild mushroom risotto.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Taiwanese braised pork belly (Lu Rou Fan), charcoal-grilled wagyu beef, or roast goose.
