Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 95 pts
- 95 Points - Monica Larner (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The Bruno Giacosa 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is a fine and delicate wine that throws a curveball at our expectations of this notoriously hot and dry vintage. The wine is exceedingly generous when it comes to its fruit, especially its blackcurrant and plum, but what steals the show is that elegant mineral note that so seamlessly cedes to spice, licorice and cinnamon. Rabajà is one of the most distinctive growing sites in Barbaresco, thanks to its white stony soils that leave such a strong imprint on its wines. The wine is remarkable for its nicely linear and delicate style, but it ultimately proves its power and determination on the palate over many long minutes.
- The Majestic Rabajà Terroir: Rabajà is revered alongside Asili as Barbaresco's premier single vineyard. Situated on steep, south-facing slopes with calcareous marl and clay soils rich in minerals, Rabajà produces Nebbiolo with higher power, firmer tannic structure, and deeper earthiness than neighboring sites.
- Classic Giacosa Tradition: Fermented in stainless steel and aged slowly in large neutral French oak casks (*botte grande*), Bruno Giacosa's minimalist winemaking allows the pristine fruit purity and legendary terroir of Rabajà to shine without intrusive oak sweetness.
Highlights
- 100% Nebbiolo harvested from the historic Rabajà cru in Barbaresco.
- A rich, powerful 2017 vintage packed with wild red currants, cherries, crushed rose petals, dried herbs, and chalky minerality.
- Crafted by Casa Vinicola Bruno Giacosa, offering 15 to 25+ years of majestic cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Translucent, glowing garnet-ruby with brick-red reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Fragrant, complex, and expansive. It opens with aromas of ripe wild red currants, dark cherries, and plum, accompanied by crushed rose petals, blood orange peel, dried oregano, and crushed stone.
- Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and structured. The entry brings a rich wave of dark red fruit sap that glides across a muscular mid-palate, held in check by firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant limestone acidity into a long, savory finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C in large Nebbiolo glasses to allow its complex aromatics to uncoil.
- Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is strongly recommended if opening young. Cellar-worthy through 2042+.
- Western Pairing: Slow-braised beef short ribs, roasted rack of lamb, tajarin pasta with truffles, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Taiwanese braised pork belly (Lu Rou Fan), charcoal-grilled wagyu beef, or roast goose.
