Ripe Blackberries, Rockrose, Dark Cocoa, and Benchmark Douro Terroir Intensity

The 2022 Casa Ferreirinha "Vinha Grande" Red is a rich, deeply structured, and classic expression from Portugal's legendary Douro Valley producer. Crafted from indigenous grapes grown on high-altitude schistose slopes, this wine captures the warmth and fruit intensity of the 2022 vintage alongside vibrant mountain acidity. Soaring aromas of ripe wild blackberries, dark plums, crushed rockrose (esteva), dark cocoa, and cedar lead into a medium-to-full-bodied, satiny palate framed by firm, polished tannins and a long, savory mineral finish.

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 90 pts
Wine Advocate 90 pts
  • 90 Points - JamesSuckling.com: A meaty, flavorful red with aromas of red peppers and tapenade, as well as stony and dusty notes. A blend of Baixo Corgo and Douro Superior. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a clean, straightforward finish. Drink now.
  • 90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2022 Vinha Grande is a blend of Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz that matured in used French oak barrels for 12 months. 2022 was a very warm and very dry year (with one-third of the normal amount rain; 2005 was the driest year in Douro). It's an aromatic, gentle and approachable red with notes of berries, herbs and spice, a certain creaminess and a velvety palate with contained ripeness. They have room for growth here, because this wine is a mixture of grapes from different vineyards, showing the character from Douro; it's approachable and good for the table, with a certain structure and fine tannins. It's soft and easy. 370,000 bottles produced. It's all bottled in one month, usually in February/March, and this was bottled in 2024.

  • Indigenous Douro Grape Blend: Sourced primarily from Quinta do Sairrão and Quinta do Caêdo estates in the Cima Corgo sub-region. The blend consists of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz grown on steep, slate-like schist terraces.
  • Legacy of Casa Ferreirinha: Casa Ferreirinha is the legendary house behind Barca-Velha, Portugal's most revered fine wine. Vinified with gentle extraction and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, "Vinha Grande" offers an accessible taste of this storied estate's winemaking heritage.
