Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 98 Points – James Suckling: "Shows restraint in this opulent year. Quite complete and refined, and you immediately pick up a bit of sweetness from the fruit of this vintage, but it is not over the top. A lot of finesse and length, with structured, dusty tannins. A no-brainer buy from the vintage. 60% new oak. 83% cabernet sauvignon, 11.5% merlot and 5.5% cabernet franc. Drink from 2027."
- 97+ Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Léoville Barton is performing brilliantly in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, pen ink, cigar box and spices. Medium to full-bodied, suave and velvety, it's dense and concentrated, with terrific energy and persistence. As readers will remember, it's the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot harvesting and vinification, along with a number of other technical improvements that translate into enhanced purity and precision."
- A New Chapter for a Great Second Growth: Under the continuous multi-generational stewardship of the Barton family, this Saint-Julien icon reaches new heights of precision in 2022. The deployment of a brand-new, gravity-led winery with double the amount of temperature-regulated vats allowed for an absolute micro-selection of plots. Rooted on deep Garonne gravels over rich clay, this magnificent release frames New World vintage power inside an old-school, deeply intellectual Médoc chassis.
Highlights
- An elite Grand Cru Classé blend composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11.5% Merlot, and 5.5% Cabernet Franc.
- The inaugural vintage processed in the estate's cutting-edge winery, utilizing state-of-the-art gravity flow and plot-by-plot vinification.
- Aged with extreme care for 16 to 18 months in fine French oak barrels, incorporating exactly 60% brand-new wood.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, opaque ink-purple with shimmering violet edges.
- Nose: Aristocratic and perfectly delineated, opening with intense cassis, black cherry puree, and bilberry fruit, complexed by cold cast iron, cedar cigar box, graphite, iris flowers, and an underlying estuarine oyster-shell minerality.
- Palate: Medium-to-full-bodied, dense, and tightly wound. Saturated layers of dark forest preserves and chocolate elements strike the palate with immense purity, driven by an energetic, killer line of fresh acidity. The structure is heavily armored by grippy, dusty, and finely chiseled tannins, resolving into a long finish marked by pencil lead and cooling mint.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at room temperature between 16–18°C. A controlled cool environment keeps this muscular, concentrated vintage athletic and fresh.
- Decanting: If opening in its youth, a minimum 2-to-3 hour decant is mandatory to uncoil its iron-and-gravel core. Cellaring is highly recommended, as it will hit its prime window from 2030 through 2060.
- Western Pairing: Prime dry-aged ribeye steaks with truffle butter, roasted rack of venison, or slow-braised wild boar shanks.
- Asian Pairing: 柱侯牛腩煲 (Braised Beef Brisket and Tendon Pot) or 蔥爆羊肉 (Sautéed Lamb with Scallions).
