Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- The Martinborough Terroir Masterclass: Sourced from elite parcels located on the old river terraces of Martinborough, this wine showcases the unique signature of the sub-region. Celebrated for its deep-rooted vines, cool coastal winds, and alluvial gravelly silt soils, Craggy Range captures an exceptional balance of structure and savory density that closely echoes the fine clones of Burgundy.
- 93 Points – James Suckling: "This pinot noir is dense, fruity and balanced, with a charming nose of ripe cherries, dark chocolate and preserved plums. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a velvety texture and more fruit character. Flavorful with a bright finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- 92 Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2024 Pinot Noir is from the Te Muna Road vineyard in Martinborough, on New Zealand's North Island. On the nose, the wine is deeply aromatic, with spiced cherry, blood plum, new leather and star anise. In the mouth, the wine is concentrated and dense—powerful in structure and shaped by French oak—well matched but pronounced. This is a fantastic wine. Give it a couple of years prior to opening, although it certainly drinks well now! 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir hand-harvested from Craggy Range's estate and premium partner vineyards situated on the alluvial stony terraces of Martinborough.
- Grown on unique gravelly silt loam matrices that naturally drain quickly, restricting berry size to deliver remarkable structural extraction and depth.
- Vinified meticulously with partial whole-bunch inclusion to add a complex floral lifting, followed by maturation in premium French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Luminous, translucent dark ruby-crimson.
- Nose: Lifted, intense, and heavily complexed, bursting with fresh red cherry, dark plum, and wild bramble fruits, intricately layered with wild thyme, dried tarragon, warm baking spices, and a damp forest-floor earthiness.
- Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and linear. Pure flavors of sour cherry flesh and dark berry compote stream across the tongue, driven forcefully by a precise, refreshing line of natural acidity. The mid-palate possesses an architectural, chalky density, framed by fine-grained, structural tannins that extend smoothly into a long, savory finish larded with baking spice and dried herbs.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–15°C to highlight its intense herbal aromatics and keep the linear, refreshing structure focused.
- Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute open is recommended to allow the youthful fruit elements and fine tannins to breathe and integrate. Built with magnificent structural DNA to cellar nicely over the next 8–10 years.
- Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast, grilled salmon steaks with rosemary, pan-seared venison medallions, or wild mushroom risotto.
- Asian Pairing: 明炉燒鴨 (Roasted Duck), 豉油雞 (Soy Sauce Chicken), or 滷水鵝 (Chiu Chow Braised Goose).
