Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 92-95 pts
Jasper Morris 93-97 pts
Wine Advocate 92-94 pts
- 92-95 Points (Sweet Spot) - Burghound (Allen Meadows): There are vague Chablis-like elements on the nose of green apple, petrol, just sliced citrus, iodine and quinine. The rich, dense and exceptionally powerful big-bodied flavors manage to retain a certain refinement while delivering superb length on the balanced, bone-dry and stony finish. This moderately austere effort is also seriously good and has the structure to repay 12 to 15 years of keeping. In a word, excellent.
- 93-97 Points★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): A low key lemon and lime colour. Clean fresh and classic on the nose. A very typical fresh stony palate, lightly washed in citrus, with enough flesh to provide the body necessary for ageing, and a fine, long, persistently mineral finish. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted Nov 2022.
- 92-94 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of pear, crisp yellow apple, white flowers, freshly baked bread and toasted nuts. Full-bodied, taut and chiseled, it's unusually concentrated, with a bright spine of acidity and chalky structuring extract. It's a standout of the range and well worth seeking out.
- The Majestic Terroir of Corton-Charlemagne: Situated on the upper steep slopes of the Hill of Corton, this Grand Cru features white marl and chalky limestone soils. The unique exposure and high altitude give Chardonnay its legendary mineral reduction, laser-like precision, and immense aging power.
- Centuries of Domain Excellence at Bouchard Père & Fils: Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s most historic estates. Managing prime holdings across Corton-Charlemagne, their vinification under careful barrel control balances classical wood framing with pure, unadorned terroir expression.
Highlights
- 100% Chardonnay estate-harvested from prime plots in the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru vineyard.
- A radiant 2021 Grand Cru expression combining citrus zest, white flowers, and chiseled limestone minerality.
- Crafted by the legendary Maison Bouchard Père & Fils, boasting extended cellaring potential over 15 to 25+ years.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright pale gold with brilliant greenish-yellow reflections.
- Nose: Intensely mineral, airily perfumed, and taut. It opens with aromas of green apple, Meyer lemon, and orange oil, complemented by notes of white blossoms, cold crushed stone, and subtle toasted hazelnut.
- Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and incisive. The entry delivers a concentrated wave of orchard fruit sap before the chalky limestone energy takes over, driving into an exceptionally long, dry, and mouth-watering saline finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 11–13°C to allow its concentrated texture and complex aromatics to uncoil fully.
- Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if opening early to let the tight acidity and stony frame soften. Cellar-worthy through 2040+.
- Western Pairing: Pan-seared turbot, lobster Thermidor, roast veal chops in cream sauce, or seared sea scallops with lemon butter.
- Asian Pairing: Steamed grouper with ginger and spring onions, butter-braised king prawns, or Cantonese roast poultry.
