Grand Curoulet is one of Arbois’ finest sites: a north‑facing slope above Arbois and the Saône plain, with gray and variegated (green/red) Trias marl soils that impart strong minerality. The vineyard was replanted in 2015 with 2/3 Savagnin and 1/3 Chardonnay, but this cuvée is made from 100% Savagnin. The wine is fermented in foudres and barrels, with one‑third of the fruit macerating overnight on skins before pressing, and aged in 500‑liter barrels without new oak. It is biodynamic and represents the most accomplished ouillé Savagnin at Domaine du Pélican.
Tasting Notes
Expect summer flowers, orange peel, sweet blossom, mango, and a touch of exotic lychee, with bright notes of lime leaf, verbena, white tea, and Sicilian lemon. The palate is rich yet taut, with surprising acidity, a burst of flavor, and a long, echoing finish that carries a fine sea‑salt minerality.
Awards and Accolades
Regarded as a standout expression of ouillé Savagnin in the Jura, with a drinking window extending over the next decade or more.
Serving and Cellaring
Serve at around 11°C. The 2020 vintage is already in its prime and can be enjoyed now, with the potential to hold 10–20 years, developing further complexity while retaining its mineral core. Pair with baked monkfish, oysters with snail butter, poached poultry with oyster mushrooms, or rich cheeses like Vieux Comté or Mont d’Or.
