Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 91-94 pts
- 91-94 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): Generous wood sets off airy and cool aromas of mostly red berries, earth and a hint of sauvage character. There is both more volume and a lovely texture to the bigger-bodied and solidly dense flavors that conclude in a sappy, complex and toasty finale. This is quite good with fine development potential though definitely made in an oakier style.
- The Hallowed Terroir of Charmes-Chambertin: Domaine Humbert's parcel rests on the iron-rich, clay-limestone soils of Charmes-Chambertin. In the cooler 2021 season, this site produced grapes with intense aromatic purity, balancing the natural structural authority of Gevrey-Chambertin with the supple, floral charm for which the vineyard is famous.
- The Humbert Frères Old-School Craft: Brothers Emmanuel and Frédéric Humbert farm their old-vine holdings with strict traditional dedication. Hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting guaranteed pristine fruit quality, while careful aging in select French oak barrels framed the vibrant 2021 acidity into a polished, harmonious Grand Cru.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from old Grand Cru vines in Charmes-Chambertin.
- A beautifully balanced, high-toned 2021 Grand Cru that offers crystalline red fruit, silky texture, and excellent aging potential.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Translucent, bright ruby-red core with delicate sapphire highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Intensely fragrant, fresh, and complex. It opens with aromas of wild red raspberries, fresh red cherries, and rose petals, layered with hints of baking spices, forest floor, and fine toasted oak.
- Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and silky. The entry delivers a pure splash of red berry sap that glides across a bed of fine-grained, supple tannins. An energetic spine of natural acidity balances the fruit weight, driving into a sappy, long, and beautifully structured finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–16°C. A gentle, cellar-like chill highlights the bright red fruit purity and keeps the profile fresh.
- Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if opening early to allow the delicate perfume and oak structure to open up. Built to cellar gracefully through 2038+.
- Western Pairing: Slow-roasted duck breast, pan-seared venison fillets, roasted rack of lamb, wild mushroom risottos, or herb-crusted veal.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck with savory plum sauce, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), braised beef brisket, or wok-fried beef with ginger.
