Wild Strawberries, Dried Rose, Star Anise, and Neive Sandstone Elegance

The 2022 Elvio Cogno Barbaresco "Bordini" is an ethereal, perfumed Nebbiolo masterfully crafted by Valter Fissore. Sourced from the historic Bordini cru in Neive, it opens with pure aromas of wild strawberries, cranberries, dried rose petals, and subtle orange peel. Medium-bodied and seamless, it pairs crunchy red fruit with fine-grained, chalky tannins and vibrant natural freshness, culminating in a persistent, savory, and delicately mineral-etched finish.

Terroir & Domaine Craft

  • The Bordini Cru in Neive: Sourced from a premier 40-year-old vineyard parcel situated in the Bordini MGA within the commune of Neive. Perched at approximately 270 meters above sea level with a southern exposure, the soils are dominated by blue-grey Tortonian calcareous marl and layers of porous sandstone (*Arenarie di Diano*), providing the classic Neive hallmark of lifted floral perfume, silkier tannins, and early structural elegance.
  • Valter Fissore’s Barbaresco Project: While globally renowned for benchmark Barolo from Novello’s Ravera cru, Elvio Cogno and winemaker Valter Fissore acquired vines in Neive in 2006 to explore the ethereal nuance of Barbaresco. Vinified traditionally with temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation and aged for around 12–14 months in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks (*botti grandi*) followed by bottle rest, the wine highlights the delicate, aromatic purity of Nebbiolo over heavy wood imprint.

Highlights

  • 100% Nebbiolo from the celebrated single-vineyard Bordini cru in Neive, Barbaresco.
  • Crafted by historic Barolo producer Elvio Cogno using classic large-cask (*botti*) maturation.
  • A luminous, fragrant 2022 vintage; prime drinking window 2026 through 2038+.

Tasting Notes

Bright, translucent ruby-red with classic orange-garnet tints, it opens with pure, high-toned aromas of fresh wild strawberries, sour cherries, and cranberries, layered with dried rose petals, blood orange peel, star anise, and sweet pipe tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied, taut, and energetic, carrying crunchy red fruit across a framework of fine-grained, chalky tannins and vibrant natural acidity, culminating in a persistent, savory, and delicately mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1 hour if enjoying in its youth to allow its aromatic florals and fine tannins to breathe. Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2038+.
