Dried Rose Petals, Sour Cherries, Tobacco, and Rare Rosé Sub-Variety Nobility

The 2019 Elvio Cogno Barolo Riserva Ravera "Vigna Elena" is a singular, ethereal Piedmont benchmark. Sourced exclusively from 100% Nebbiolo sub-variety Rosé in Novello, it unfurls translucent aromas of sour cherries, dried roses, licorice, blood orange, and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium-to-full-bodied, tensile, and aristocratic, it combines gossamer fruit with seamless, architectural tannins and crystalline limestone acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory finish.

Highlights

  • 100% Nebbiolo made exclusively from the historic and extraordinarily rare "Rosé" sub-variety (clone), famous for its pale garnet color and unmatched floral elegance.
  • Single-parcel 1-hectare cru within the renowned Ravera MGA in Novello, situated at 380 meters elevation on calcareous clay marls with limestone veins.
  • Planted in 1991 to celebrate the birth of Elena, daughter of winemaker Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno; the label features the iconic chick drawing she made at age three.
  • Strictly classical traditional aging: 36 months in 40-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks (botti grandi), followed by at least 24 months in bottle before release as a DOCG Riserva.
  • From the benchmark, classical 2019 Barolo vintage; an aristocratic cellar treasure with a drinking window from 2027 through 2055+.

Tasting Notes

Bright, translucent pale ruby with luminous brick-garnet reflections, it opens with an intoxicating, multi-layered perfume of wild sour cherries, fresh pomegranate, and dried rose petals, intricately interwoven with blood orange peel, star anise, sweet pipe tobacco, truffles, and crushed limestone rock. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, tensile, and remarkably pure, matching vibrant red fruit against seamless, fine-grained architectural tannins and racy mountain acidity, concluding on an expansive, savory, and delicately balsamic mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in expansive Burgundy or Barolo stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1.5 to 2 hours if enjoying in its youth to allow its delicate Nebbiolo Rosé floral aromatics and tight structural core to unfold. Prime drinking window 2027 through 2055+.
