Dried Cherries, Dark Chocolate, Sweet Spice, and Benchmark Appassimento Aristocracy

The 2021 Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a benchmark, majestic Venetian red. Crafted using Masi’s signature Appassimento method, it unfurls aromas of baked dark cherries, dried plums, dark chocolate, and cinnamon. Full-bodied, opulent, and velvety, it balances concentrated dried fruit richness against refined tannins and vibrant freshness, finishing remarkably long, warming, and harmonious.

Critical Recognition

James Suckling 94 pts
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: A restrained wine with smoke, graphite, tobacco, dark fruit and forest floor, as well as Sicilian chocolate. Graceful on the attack, showing crisp acidity and refined tannins. Gentle extraction compared to previous vintages, with a muscular yet focused finish. Drinkable now but best from 2031.

Highlights

  • Authentic Venetian blend of Corvina (approx. 70%), Rondinella (25%), and Molinara (5%) grown in the historic Valpolicella Classica zone.
  • Sourced from west and south-west facing hillside slopes ("Costasera") facing Lake Garda, where gentle lake breezes and extended sunlight promote optimal grape health and gradual drying.
  • Crafted using Masi’s celebrated Appassimento technique, naturally drying hand-harvested bunches on traditional bamboo racks (arele) for over 100 days to concentrate sugars, aromas, and extract.
  • Aged for at least 24 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks (80%) and smaller French Allier oak barriques (20%) to build velvety textural polish.
  • From the balanced, highly favorable 2021 vintage; prime drinking window 2025 through 2042+.

Tasting Notes

Deep, opaque ruby-red with brilliant garnet reflections, it opens with pure, commanding aromas of baked dark cherries, dried plums, and wild berry preserve, seamlessly accented by dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, sweet cinnamon, and dried violet petals. The palate is full-bodied, multi-layered, and velvety, wrapping lavish dried fruit and cocoa in a framework of plush, fine-grained tannins and balancing acidity, culminating in an expansive, warm, and persistent savory finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large, expansive red wine or Amarone stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1 to 2 hours prior to serving to let its dense dried fruit aromatics and complex spices fully unfurl. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2042+.
