Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 94 Points - James Suckling: The impressive interplay of restrained richness and very animating mineral acidity is what gives this excellent gruner veltliner its pronounced personality. Long, wild herb finish that’s simultaneously compact and refreshing. A cuvee of about half vineyards on the plain and half young vines on the steep, terraced vineyards of the region. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
- The Dürnstein Village Terroir: Sourced from various plots within the historic commune of Dürnstein along the Danube River. The soils combine weathered Gföhl gneiss and granite from the lower terrace slopes with fertile alluvial sand, gravel, and loess from the plain, creating a harmonious dialogue between rich varietal spice and taut stony minerality.
- Lucas Pichler's Origin-Driven Philosophy: With F.X. Pichler’s departure from the Vinea Wachau categorization in favor of the Wachau DAC system, the Dürnsteiner Ortswein (village wine) focuses purely on geographic origin. Gentle handling, temperature-controlled fermentation, and aging on fine lees ensure total transparency of fruit and limestone-inflected energy.
Highlights
- 100% Grüner Veltliner sourced exclusively from premier village sites across Dürnstein.
- Crafted under the Wachau DAC Ortswein classification by Lucas Pichler.
- A vibrant, pristine 2023 dry white; prime drinking window now through 2033+.
Tasting Notes
Bright straw-yellow with green reflections, it opens with vibrant aromas of crunchy green apple, ripe yellow pear, and fresh lime zest, layered with freshly cracked white pepper, wet river stones, and wild herbal hints. The palate is medium-bodied, crystalline, and focused, balancing juicy orchard fruit against a spine of racy, mouth-watering acidity, culminating in a clean, persistent, and distinctly saline mineral finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve chilled at 9–11°C in standard white wine stems.
- Decanting: Decanting is not necessary; 10 to 15 minutes of glass aeration allows its pepper and citrus aromatics to fully blossom. Best enjoyed now through 2033+.
