(Wine Advocate Score 96-98) The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here.

Fonseca Vintage Port 2017

Fonseca Vintage Port 2017

From Fonseca in Vila Nova de Gaia, Douro Valley, the Vintage Port 2017 is a refined blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, and Tinta Amarela from steep, schistous vineyards. Aged in large oak vats, it offers an inky purple hue with vibrant complexity.

Tasting Notes

A dense, opulent port with rich fruit and structured finesse, showcasing Douro’s terroir.
The nose reveals blackberry, cassis, and red berry, with hints of balsamic and cedar. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and velvety, with taut tannins, crisp acidity, and flavors of liquorice, dark fruit, and a long, mineral finish.

Awards and Accolades

The 2017 Vintage Port earned 95 points from Vinous and James Suckling for its opulent, structured profile, and 93.8 points from CellarTracker for its rich depth.

Food Pairings

Pair this port with Western dishes like blue cheese or chocolate truffles to highlight its rich, jammy notes. For Chinese cuisine, try 蒸鮮蝦餃, 清蒸石斑魚, 蟹鉗, 醬爆肉丁, 椒鹽九肚魚, or 豉椒炒蜆 to complement its balanced sweetness and intensity. Ideal for desserts or tapas feasts.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve at 16°C in a small port glass, decanted to remove sediment. Enjoy now or cellar until 2040 for added complexity. Explore our Douro collection for more port classics.
